The "original" story is that the Twelve were beings living in Eorzea, they lived in prosperity and then the "wandering tribes" began appearing into Eorzea (dunno what race the tribes are). The Twelve allowed them to settle and live and share in the prosperity. Eventually the wandering tribes began to war with one another, watching this the Twelve left (maybe driven out?) Eorzea. This ushered in the 1st Umbral Era. Currently that's all we know, how it was passed down we don't know. Really everything before the Allagan Empire is unknown, the Allagans themselves could have began and wrote/spoke about such history making them the creators. We simply don't know at the moment.
