I find that anyone that decides to offer unsolicited advise to be the ultimate backseat driver of <insert class of preference here> - it is rude. Especially when it's coming from someone I do not know at all. It pisses me off. I personally do not appreciate it. If I need help or advise, I ask for it.

There's a right way and a wrong way to give advice. your intent may have been good enough, but you chose to go about it the wrong way, and got called out because of it.

There is no way except negatively for someone to take that. None. You literally threw them under a bus in the first line of the conversation that we can see. How do we know there wasn't more beyond that?

So, while I won't disagree that people are WAY TOO DAMN DEFENSIVE... in your case? Completely justified. Treat people like crap and they shut down. Treat 'em with respect and they'll open up to you.

One thing I loved about FFXI is that if I wanted to give people advice, I could send them a tell about it. The way it is now in FFXIV, the whole party will see the conversation and not everybody enjoys being called out in front of others, so they might respond in a certain way to try and save face, so to speak.

Real people play video games, so there's no reason not to expect similar results when interacting with them (especially given the example). I mean, your argument could be used to the OP's benefit, and say "well in real life you might exercise tact when offering advice, but this is a game, and is therefore not subject to the same social rules."

That first line was the first thing I said in that dungeon. I can't think of a way to prove that, but that's your choice if you want to believe that or not. Also, I do not agree that line can only be taken negatively. While I can't imagine the same situation for myself perfectly, I think the first thing I would do after reading this is mouse over my most used skills and wonder what he meant, if I don't get it, I'd go "Huh?", or "Why?".
