To put my idea out there as plain as day. My idea for a great online game, would be a combination of both. Wow's combat design and freedom, SE's storytelling and immersion. While i'm at it I may as well wish pigs could fly.And despite that feeling of freedom, you still preferred FFXI. That says a lot.
The ability to move everywhere doesn't require random jumping. You can climb up, down, drop from ledges, and all that can be context sensitive, allowing you to go anywhere you like without bothering others (or giving others the tool to bother others).
I would say that's the most balanced solution.
You don't need jump for that. You just need nonsensical invisible walls to be removed.
I understand that. Unfortunately not everyone enjoys that kind of "design and freedom", since it inevitably leads to twitchy gameplay (that a large part of the Japanese audience tends to abhor, by the way, not a good move on SE's part, considering that they make the largest part of their customerbase).
I just offered a way to mediate. To give people what they want without bothering a lot of other people (since quite evidently, due to the sole existence of threads like this one, in every forum of every MMORPG in the world, a lot of people are bothered by random jumping).
I personally don't think that an all-or-nothing attitude is the best solution.
