But the only things worth spending gil on is Vanity and Melded i90 gear/Novus. Most of which is for DoW/M.
If you're DoL/H only all you're doing is spending gil on materials to make more gil, its a never ending cycle of spending money to make more money that you're not going to need.
Except, if you're gathering while crafting, you don't spend a single gil on materials. Ever. Unless you're too lazy to gather them yourself.

I can see where he is coming from though.

Starting out as a crafter, you need start up Gil. And well, in MMORPGs in general, leveling crafting does not make you money. It usually cost an arm and a leg to get it to a level where it's truly profitable.

And getting a fighting class to 50 and having done your quests, you should have over 200k Gil. That will help a lot. You will also have cheap access to tome materials.

I would guess the issue of the Noob Vs Pro is more, Individual way Vs Fast/Optimal way.

Not all items can be gathered by those classes.

In other games, usually, yeah. But I made millions of gil before I even reached 50 in my crafts, simply through crafting. I didn't even touch gathering classes until all of my crafts were 50.

For the topic... pro at what? I make it my goal to reach high end crafting in any game I play. My entire character was made with this goal in mind. Based in Ul'dah, seeking fortune, guardian deity Nald'thal. It is my primary goal to make gil, and I've made a lot of it by keeping it my focus.

Raiding comes second to this for me. Sure, I progress my DoM when I can. But it comes second to my other goals.

Well, leveling a combat class is necessary to complete the vast majority of quests in the game -- including main story quests, which unlock core features like retainers, grand companies, your chocobo, etc. FATEs are purely combat-oriented. Every map outside of a town is littered with enemies that you simply cannot deal with directly as a gatherer/crafter. So in that respect, there is simply no contest -- DoW/DoM is needed for most content in this game (and is rewarded far more), whereas you can't argue the same thing for DoL/DoH.

If you're talking strictly about mastering only, I don't know. I'm not at max level yet. Does anything important unlock at 50 besides more dungeons, raids, and PvP modes? Seems like it is just more combat, so if that is not your thing and you'd rather craft, then putting energy into mastering a combat class first is a waste of your time.

This is a video game; you should enjoy it as you like, and not according to what some scrub "friend" considers "pro." And yes, him calling anyone who thinks otherwise "noobs" is insulting. Honestly, he sounds very immature and annoying to talk to. I don't see why it's worth even engaging in a "debate" with this person.

Except if you do leatherworker ^^
Then you would need a DoM/DoW as gatherer class.

What does he mean by "mastering" a class? Simply getting yourself to 50 is only the beginning in both cases.

Crafting classes are easier to level when you've unlocked all of the levequests, which takes a DoW/DoM class.

Personally, I got one DoW class (Paladin) to 50 and worked on gearing it; meanwhile I've leveled up and geared every DoH/DoL class while working on a few more DoW/DoM. I've been very focused on crafting/gathering; I have five three-star crafting classes and am working on the last two. Two of my three DoL classes have the Forager tools and I'm working slowly on the last one. Does this make me a noob? Does it make me something else? Honestly, I don't care either way; I think your friend is taking an incredibly narrow-minded view of the game.

Part of what's great about FFXIV is the wide variety of content that it offers. Do you enjoy crafting? Then craft. Do you enjoy kicking the crap out of mobs? Then go be DoW/DoM. When I don't feel like raiding or leveling, the crafting and gathering content is always there to keep me busy. At the end of the day, it's a game. You get out of it what you put into it, so do what you enjoy doing and don't let anyone tell you any differently.
