But the advertisement should have been before the game released. Which was before 95% of people found out it was garbage then.

Probably wasn't Square but Disney, all hail Disney.
I did see a FFXIII commercial on the discovery channel during Man vs Wild, though it seemed out of place...
FFX-2 had exploitable female characters wearing skimpy outfits with sailor moon transformation scenes, it also had music with lyrics with the Japanese version being sung by Koda Kumi XIV has none of that.
This made me chuckle, the thought that the devs didn't argue until they were blue in the face to NOT release it I find more likely. SE money grabbing big wigs I would gamble on.
Speaking as a dev myself (not on the same scale of course) I can say you are always under pressure to get what you are doing out the door yesterday, sometimes regardless of glaring bugs and issues; the voice of the dev is seldom heard in the face of your bosses bosses boss telling you it has to go now regardless of the state it is in. The decision can come so far up the management chain that all they have seen is "Well it looks like it works, what's the problem?"
Not flaming/trolling, just saying I disagree =)
There was actually quite a bit of advertising very early on at launch, but they very quickly scrapped it when the first reviews bombed.
I wouldn't be too concerned about it, if there's one thing SE knows, it's how to bank on their fanbase.

Square Enix effectively advertise a game? *Shocked face straight chibi style out of an anime* Or any japanese gaming company effectively advertise a game in the west? It cost money that the Japanese usually aren't willing to doll out to advertise on a level that lets say rivals rift (weather girl commercial.) They could do it, and I want them to. But they never do. FFXIII commercial with that Britain's Got Talent, or British Xfacter or w/e Leona Lewis w/e was awful. I'm a woman and that commercial did not appeal to me, but I felt they were trying to tug at my ovaries :/ and it just wasn't working. I want the FFXIV rp commercial japan got, no fair :/

I agree. When it gets closer to release I'll post again with my thoughts.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I definitely like the idea of promoting a trial period to let people try the game out without having to buy it. I'm pretty sure they're going to work on this though. It's one of those "given" parts of almost any MMO.

Insulting people in the counter argument isn't going to change their minds. It will make them stick harder to their opinion regardless of whether or not it's right, and think less of your opinion simply because you insulted them. In essence, if you want to try and change someone's mind, come up with a well thought-out response and don't be a dick.
They don't need to advertise their games much. Only people who will play it are probably the ones with a SE account getting emails from SE advertising new games

Um, based on what I know for TV spots in Japan and America, XI alone covers as many commercials as they want for their products.
XIV isn't making money, therefore they're not going to splurge a ton of cash into something that may not even be beneficial to do -- cost also refers to resources, memory and workload.
