Yeah. Skill and stats should ALWAYS matter. If they won't matter at the high end (besides simply being the gate you have to jump in order to try at all), then what's the point of having them?
I pretty much have had to give up on fishing. I still need silver sovereigns... but I have the max gathering/perception I can get with HQ and material... so I pop a HQ tomato pie.. and go fishing. in the 30 minutes of the food buff... I got ONE silver sovereign and it was not HQ.... this was during the right hours as the same game time the previous game day I caught like 4 non HQ in 5 minutes.
essentially all it is telling me is that your skill does not matter in fishing for what you catch, only whether you are allowed to catch it or not. fishing can be hard enough as it is since you have no real control over what you catch.
but really. look at the pre-reqs for big fish.. a lot require an H catch of something, mooch that to get a HQ version of the next fish... and in a lot of cases that only gives you a CHANCE at getting the fish you want. case in point? titanic sawfish.. I have cought so many sharks and still no sawfish.
Fishing is 100% casual. I can sit in my spot, cast my rod, and watch tv while I wait for my controller to rumble to let me know to hit 1 button. I don't even have to watch the game to fish. That's about as casual as I can imagine it being.
Having the best gear and catching every single rare fish? Not casual.
Do you expect to become king of fishers by accident? It takes work.
The main issue is not if content is hard or long, it is that it is -too- random (randomness can lead to the first two non-issues, but it shouldn't be the primary tool to reach such.. as that leads to the feelings here). The feeling that what I wear is an entrance to the content and beyond that it is a ticket to a casino that requires winning another casino's machine upon another casino's machine and if you get the wrong color of a ticket from each casino then it doesn't matter you made it to the last casino, start over again.. It isn't very desirable.Fishing is 100% casual. I can sit in my spot, cast my rod, and watch tv while I wait for my controller to rumble to let me know to hit 1 button. At least this is what I surmise from OP, say otherwise if I got you wrong OP :P. Also /tiny derail, where is the tacklebox!?
Depending on how the weather forecasters are implemented I think that will help. Would be nice to get a mini game though.. or at least use for our GP lol (some sort of control of our fate, a hope that skill matters.. something).

It's wonderful to me to see people finally agreeing that the current fishing system is garbage. I'm not saying I want 1.0's system back, but it was miles better than what we have now.
I feel like there were a lot of great additions to Fisher but that they stole the soul, so now its got a pretty exterior with a dull and gotta watch TV or read something else interior- rather disappointing as a 1.0 player who treated it as an actual class. I was there with you in that beta thread XD.
If they ever feel daring again, which I hope they do, I'd like to see Fisher get revamped- takes way too much of my inventory to make me want to sign for what is more or less pure gambling (which again is sad since they added some pretty good exterior content to it like sand, sky, weight log, area log, and legendary fish).
Whoever designed fishing didn't care for 1.0 players already in the class, and didn't really care for it as a class in general. Less funny since they listened to their players for so much other stuff in beta, apparently someone pushed Yoshida into the river on a fishing trip and the rest was history... lol

I can certainly understand that but to act like the system isn't casual isn't an accurate representation. Compared to any other system in the game it is most certainly consumed in a casual manner. The main issue is not if content is hard or long, it is that it is -too- random (randomness can lead to the first two non-issues, but it shouldn't be the primary tool to reach such.. as that leads to the feelings here). I have no disagreement that once you want to start catching all the big fish it's not quite casual anymore since hitting windows and having the right gear takes some work even if ultimately the act of fishing itself is quite casual. You've taken upon yourself to enter fishing's end game and it's anything but casual. Fishing as a system is hardly perfect and once you get that involved with it that becomes pretty clear. My friends and I have used penny slots at a casino as a good metaphor for how the system works. We frequently toss some ideas around for GP based abilities that would help and I hope Square does something with all that GP.
One ability I'd love to see is for 300 GP (or some other decently high TP amount to reduce abuse) you can increase the chance of the next fish coming up HQ.
A second ability for 300 GP to greatly increase the odds you will recatch a fish you just caught.
I could see these abilities being very useful to help us target certain fish, and at the same time make GP actually useful for us. I'm sure there are more ideas people could come up with.
Also, I'm with you. The tacklebox is required at this point. I have so much bait it's insane.
I agree with all of this in terms of this is how the game is currently, I just wish it wasn't true lol.I can certainly understand that but to act like the system isn't casual isn't an accurate representation. Compared to any other system in the game it is most certainly consumed in a casual manner.

Having been a 1.0 Fisher your first sentence which is very true I find very disappointing to be such, SE should have added a secondary system or not directly shifted the course of a class into near oblivion... ... *sniffles to self*
+1 not for wanting the situation, just for having the grasp of it. Also those are some cool GP abilities, I'd like to have them~

Level'd FSH to 50 in the first four days of ARR. I max melded my FSH a month later -- all my friends lol'd at me. Big fish was launched quite some time ago, and I caught about 30 of them in the first week after the patch. Never was I rewarded with any significant monetary rewards for all of this, and my time was generally assumed to be wasted. BUT NOW... I get to welcome the masses to my life.
This thread is adorable.
P.S. This is not my main...
