I've always had more fun thinking of it as a world before a game. (mmos)Only in eastern MMOs will you find people complaining about a game becoming less like a job and more like a game.
How are these apples for realism, before I even read all 12 pages and see that argument brought up. We are playing a game, with cat girls, and magic, and furry little gnome-like creature, and the Hulk's offspring, and elves, and monsters made of rocks, and monsters made of vines, and Big Bird's cousins sitting at every city soon to be mounted, and half the population has heterochromia. I don't think getting rid of inane crafting materials and substituting them for "lolz, it's magic" repair materials are going to detract from the realism this game is trying so hard to convey.
