I think they should keep the currect system but add Dark Matter Materials as a second repair option.

Plus I dont think they should just keep it to just 1 repair type item.

Say you need Bronze Dagger... fixed.

To Repair this item use 1 of the following options

(Blacksmith Rank1) 50 Earth Shards, 50 Fire Shards
    (Blacksmith Rank1) Dark Matter rank1-10
    (Blacksmith Rank1) Bronze nugget
    (Leathercraft Rank10)Maple Grip
    (Goldsmith Rank10) 2 Brass Nuggets

More then 1 class can repair the same item which would make it more user friendly. Make Dark Matter kinda rare. Crystal Repair sorta a money sink for players that dont have any repair items.

If you check the recipe for this item they use some of the same materials in the repair.

true, they should just get rid of it or make more reasonable prizes at repair npcs and let them repair to 100%.
The way it will be now is again one of these "bug-fix" like changes and doesn't feel like an overhaul at least not a thoughtful one.

Only in eastern MMOs will you find people complaining about a game becoming less like a job and more like a game.

How are these apples for realism, before I even read all 12 pages and see that argument brought up. We are playing a game, with cat girls, and magic, and furry little gnome-like creature, and the Hulk's offspring, and elves, and monsters made of rocks, and monsters made of vines, and Big Bird's cousins sitting at every city soon to be mounted, and half the population has heterochromia. I don't think getting rid of inane crafting materials and substituting them for "lolz, it's magic" repair materials are going to detract from the realism this game is trying so hard to convey.

It doesn't take time, it just takes inventory slots. The only part that takes any length of time is going through the Market Wards to find the resources you need, and we all know how much fun that is.

I've always had more fun thinking of it as a world before a game. (mmos)

That's cool. Let me know when Walmart starts selling worlds along with their games.

Whining about realism and immersion in fantasy worlds is the failest of fails.

The inventory was an issue but what they did now just made it a dead concept, "this generic item fixes all". At least they could have a made it so each item fixes each type of gear, like wood matter fixes wood and metal mater fixes metal, at least that would make sense. This seems like a quick fix SE did without thinking, seems to please the majority, because it would free up inventory space, at the cost of not making sense of the repair system. i rarely doubt people gonna carry all 5 type of dark matter anyway, probably the grade 3 4 and 5, many would repair the 1st and 2nd grade themselves. Right now players thinking with a mind set, i could have the entire repair mats in my hand with just 5 inventory space and i can fix whatever, whenever i want but in the end the low level dark matters is just gonna sit in their like the awesome low level gear they keep in their retainer thinking it may have use in the future. I am not sure how repairers gonna make money, the gear repair cost is gonna be set with the cost of dark matter + labor charge for the craft skill, don't see it as a big income. In the end its just gonna be a system without much creativity, heck, why cant they make it so you don't have to click on weapon/armor > click on dark matter > repair, make it so when u click a damaged gear, it should automatically repair it, more convenient!.

SE please more creative in the future instead of finding a quick solution that kills the game slowly at a small convenience.

There is already too much inflation in FFXIV. Crafters hoarding all of the money, FFXI C.2005 style, is not going to help the situation. The best thing would be to have armor repair NPCs charge a ton of gil but repair -everything- to 100%. Crafters could still repair, but more focus would be placed on taking money -out- of the economy that placing it into another player's hands.

Crafters, before you get bent out of shape, even if NOBODY asked for you to repair their gear and you never made another single gil off another person, you'd still be ahead monetarily, because you can repair your own gear and thus wouldn't have to pay outrageous fees at the repair NPC.
