So you're saying because you don't like some aspect of the game you want it changed for everyone? Too bad, I like teleporting.
Don't use teleporting if you don't want to. I mainly use chocobo porters and airships, still get wherever I want...
As for hunts, just open world content... just don't make more lol. It's unplayable anyway.
Another option:Is not the same thing to have the option than being forced to something, why not give a teleport in a middle zone, like The Black Shroud having only the central shroud teleport point, you want to get to north shroud fast from uldah? Well you can get to central shroud and walk to the north shroud, you can get the idea for the rest of the zones, think of them as Teleport Holla, etc
1st: Teleport could only be useable at Aetherytes. You are in the Goblin mine and want to teleport somewhere? First ride out of the mine to the camp and click on the Aetheryte.
2nd: remove distance join from duty-finder. You are in the Sahagin Stronghold fishing and think you would want to do a round CT? Fine. First ride to Aleport, click on the Aetheryte, teleport to Mor Dhonna, ride to the Crystal Tower and click on the portal to join the queue.

How I see it, the large of the world have nothing to do with teleport.
in 1.0 the world was bigger and still there were people who wanted teleport to be removed because traveling was too save with teleport.

So instead of a bunch of people waiting on 19 3 hour timers it'd be 19 groups of people waiting on individual 3 hour timers who then have to wait for the people from adjacent zones to come in before they pull?
I agree with Felis' idea, just being able to teleport from aetherite to aetherite would fit well for the size of the map, it only takes 22 minutes to cross the whole world while mounted (I chrono'ed it)
but asakura is also right, with all these annoying WEAK monsters that Heavy you no matter your level, it's plain annoying, they're not dangerous, just annoying.
unfortunately, it is far too late to change things now, maybe with the extension and the new map they can limit it a bit but i don't think people will like the change unless it is done really sneakily, bit by bit so people do notice the slow changes but do not mind.
That sounds like a great ide.....oh wait WoW did that back in Vanilla and everyone hated it and it's why Dungeon Finders exist as they do now....NEXT!

(as a Horde player, it's the main Reason I didn't run Gnomereggan for a loooong time)
