The PS2 held back FFXI, and everyone here won't shut up about how perfect that game is...so no, the PS3/4 are not holding this game back, in the slightest. They may hold some players back due to their limitations (mostly PS3), but the game itself will continue to grow with the PS3/4 in mind.
