I have to admit that some of the points made about 1.# are things I miss. But would I want them back? No. Many times no. I liked how the TP system of 1.# worked. Would I want it back? No. I liked the massive(-ly copy-pasted) world. Would I want it back? No. I liked how armor had special features and abilities (which would sometimes invalidate the use of some pieces in favor of others). Would I... you get the picture, cause I'd be repeating myself ad nauseaum. 1.# was not the game we deserved, but it was the game we wanted. You see the disparity? Sometimes what we want isn't always better for us. Like Twinkies.

Which is why ARR is so generic - It's "what we wanted" - XIV to become "standard" that they threw out some of the better systems going for it to attain that. You may not want it back but I, on the other hand, want more engaging battles and battles where breaking limbs or parts of the body can change the flow of battle and not rely on instant kill mechanics every time to bring "challenge."

If my memory serves me correctly, the targeted attacks on NMs in 1.0 had no effect on the battle, just on the possible drops that came afterward?

It did - Maiming the Great Buffalo prevented it from attacking for a period of time (since it's collapsed on the ground) maiming Chimera prevented Scorpion Sting (that I remember off hand), maiming Mosshorn reduced charge damage (and forced drops), maiming skeletons was just a visual aspect - Shattering arms and such prevented certain weapon skills from being used like if you incapped human enemies (some even outright killed them since you know, you cut off their head.) And so on.

On regular enemies it stopped some attacks and forced drops, on bosses (NMs in general, since bosses are NMs too) it prevented attacks and allowed you to gain ground on them for a period of time until they recovered.
