I'll kind of miss the daggers though. Sure, a dagger looks a bit silly when paired with a shield but, it's really more of a "gladiator" weapon style. Think of that old movie "the gladiator" and it wouldn't look out of place there.

It's a translation thing. The Japanese version simply calls it, "sword user", so daggers being part of their arsenal was out of place in the inception. Maybe it's a throwback from 1.0?

Yes. It was the Tanaka team that gave Gladiator daggers. Maybe because they are like swords one-handed blade weapons.
Yoshida talked already during 1.0 about removing daggers from the gladiator to give them thief (now rogue) if the class come someday.
