Lol, I agree. I realize that wooden swords are a part of weapon history and such but.... what am I, a pirate!?
I'll kind of miss the daggers though. Sure, a dagger looks a bit silly when paired with a shield but, it's really more of a "gladiator" weapon style. Think of that old movie "the gladiator" and it wouldn't look out of place there. As a paladin, sure, you don't want to use a puny, un-knightly dagger though. A dagger is more of a weapon of despiration and not becoming of a knight. So having the daggers earlier down the line in a way showed their evolution in style...
Dunno, I guess it doesn't matter... a bastard sword though? That's the name of one of the replacement blades. It seems a bit much to use one handed.... lol
Well a bastard sword, also known as a hand and a half sword, where made to be used with either 1 or 2 hands. Larger than broadswords, but not as large as true 2 handed swords.

It was just a funny line from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" that I remember.
Captain Jack Sparrow's sword gets taken away... "Well, I half expected it to be made of wood!"
I realize that Macuahuitls are completely different though.

It's a translation thing. The Japanese version simply calls it, "sword user", so daggers being part of their arsenal was out of place in the inception. Maybe it's a throwback from 1.0?

Yes. It was the Tanaka team that gave Gladiator daggers. Maybe because they are like swords one-handed blade weapons.
Yoshida talked already during 1.0 about removing daggers from the gladiator to give them thief (now rogue) if the class come someday.

Bastard swords are shorter than longswords but longer than shortswords. They're single-handed weapons.
afaik, we're not losing Spatha. I honestly wouldn't mind if they kept the Gladii, but I'm glad they're getting rid of daggers. They just seemed so out of place.

I believe they're actually longer than longswords but shorter than great/2h swords.
They could be used with either one or two hands due to the length of the pommel.
Edit: The internets agree with me
