The class quests are new. Only the job quests are the same (even if the WHM queststory got changed a bit)
The mainstory is also new. As example, the Limsa mainstory in ARR don't start on a ship in a stormy sea with a big sea serpent jumping over it.

True, now every single city got the lame "I'm going in town on choco carriage, mute talking to one of the triplet and oh mah gahd an arrow!! I'll just move my arm and make an angry face to warn you! Letsgetoutta here before the beast men kills us!"
Or just skip this all, I got teleported near the city thanks to louisoix, let's not give a care about Bahamut and go to town then talk casually with the bartender like I never met him/her.
Seriously, there's absolutely no life in ARR's cutscene, sure in v1 too you character never spoke, or at least his lines were cut but the animation for some scenes (the ones where stuff happen) actually felt real.
The chase in the black shroud for example was super funny, the fight against gaius was kinda epic too even tho he beat the shit out of you single handedly, now in all cutscenes, most animations are just emotes, talk about laziness.
I know they had to do it because they didn't had much time but, at least the opening scene, this is the first thing a player see, it's supposed to be something epic that makes you pumped up and feel exited about the game, well in arr it bored me to death, except for the drinking moogle, that one was funny, but the rest was bland.
Yup. It would be fun to explore the history of Eorzea in person, rather than through quest dialog. If we're living in the 7th astral era now... & the battle of cartenu was at the end of the 7th umbral era... what about visiting the 3rd astral era at the height of the allagan empire. Or the 3rd umbral era to witness its destruction. Or the mysterious second eras. I don't suggest reusing maps or zones via cut & paste... or dusting off the old version 1.0 engine.
The past in ffxi didn't use any previous ff engines but it did allow you to access new zones & unlock the Dancer job.
