I did some spirit bonding in the South Shroud was pretty fast. My question is why do people talk about putting material on the gear you are trying to Spirit Bond?

Because each materia increases the spiritbonding speed.
I believe one materia ups it by 20%, two by 40% etc.
Trash elemental materias are good for this.
It speeds it up by a reported 20% per materia, just as the HQ vs NQ version of the equip would. Ever since the increased base value of materia was implemented some patches ago, melding for binding isn't very cost efficient in most cases.
Wanderer's Palace and Amdapor Keep are ok for a change of scenery from SB'ing Urth's Gift, etc. all day as long as the rest of your party doesn't object. I find if I keep my SB gear to accessories only and appropriate for my job (such as str for melee dps, int for mage, etc) few people object. Also aim for an ilvl over 70 if you do this and your damage won't suffer too drastically to slow the party down much, as the mobs are easy. It's not the most efficient or best but it can be fun (sometimes).

Hmm ok dunno if it would be worth it maybe for trying to get T4 materias. But elemental resist materias did fall in price again. Thanks for the info though.
crystal tower and T3

The other thing about melding something you will SB is it's supposed to up the chance of a higher grade. So if you're trying to get IV materia, using trash materia on those items can help a little. Plus it makes bonding the higher level items take less time.

Some people like to use the +spiritbond ring and other items like that, while most I know just go all out and just put gear in every slot to spiritbond. The potions are basically a "why not" situation.
Some popular jobs to spiritbond on are white mage and bard. Holy is your friend if whm'ing it up. Bard is kind of nice too, but if you are going alone, you'll probably have a easier time as a white mage. Really any job is fine, except I'd imaging going as a tank is slower if you are alone.
It's probably best to use your best weapon as your only "normal" gear. If you want to go all out and use a weapon that you can break for materia too that is also a option but, in my experience it's faster to just use the nicest weapon you have on hand. Also, bring some dark matter to repair your weapon if you can, or just bring a spare weapon because it will eventually break if you go at it for a long bit.

If you can craft your own i70's the mats for some are pretty cheap, and better to guarantee your t4's rather than rely on a 10% rate from 45-55's. Just keep in mind your options for sb are limited to coil, ct, lvl 50 dungeons other than wp/ak.
i find CM to be the eaiest place to spirit bind. as a lot of the mobs get killed by cannons effortlsy and its part of the daily roulet for main scenario. i usually just put any crafting gear left overs and go spirit bind there in duty finder. and sometimes i take the partica set.i do it as a healer ( sch ) and i have no healing issues even without any extra MND stat from the healing gear cause its just so easy its designed for level 45 gear.
