Rendering every retainer won't work; the system is encountering problems now with ~1000 players per server. It's going to be a literal nightmare when the game gets more popular, if at all. They need to make everything happen from a window interface and get rid of rendering retainers and ward zones.

Also yes, I suppose the practical solution is to place one's retainers in other cities, if the aim is to get it up and listed somewhere. But generally nobody likes the other cities and a good majority (or plurality, w/e) congregate in Ul'Dah. Ul'Dah is where you are most likely to find your customer base at this point. Listing in another city almost guarantees obscurity sadly. The band-aid solution to this I suppose, Wolfie's larger fully conceived permanent solution aside, would be to have the item search function open up to a menu before the ward menu shows up allowing you to choose which city you want to search in, no matter which city you are currently in (ie. global searches of a sort). At least then no matter where you were forced to list your retainer, your customer will at the very least be able to find you, and if they so choose and your prices are reasonable, they may well venture out to you in the middle of nowhere (Gridania) to buy from your retainer.

It's one thing for someone to see your listed retainer in a different city and choose not to bother coming out there (I probably wouldn't), at the very least the option(s) was/were presented to that person in an accessible and visible way. One can't really do more than offer. It's another thing entirely to never have been seen at all because you were forced to list somewhere nobody cares to go or will practically never even think to look.
