I find that if I call someone a "she," based on their character's gender, I'll get corrected 95% of the time. I wouldn't worry about correcting people, it's just the reality of having so many male gamers who play as females. Try not to let it bother you!

Wow. I didn't think this thread would get this much attention so fast. Somehow I still read it all...

Pretty much OP, you're bringing real-life into the game, and that's your issue. Its not that people are being mean, its that you are choosing to make a big deal out of what amounts to nothing. If you want to use gaming as an escape, then use gaming as an escape; bringing your RL issues into the game nullifies that, and that IS your fault.

Ultimately, you are no more special than random guy #173920; I'm not treating you any different than anyone else because you have some RL issue that has no bearing on your ability to play that you've brought into the game. If you correct me, fine, I'll call you how you want...but if you do it in a trollish way don't expect much.

I love to say to random Lala I meet "In the words of a famous professor: 'Are you a Boy or a Girl?'" Always get laughs out of it.

+1 to this. It's really hard for me to tell what gender most lalafells are. Plus "Kim" is both a male and a female name, and "Kimmy" is an androgynous derivative of that. Regardless if you are a natural woman, a trans woman, or anything else I'd probably inadvertently call you "he" unless told otherwise because 1) your character is more androgynous than anything else and 2) sadly males do dominate the game community so it's much safer to just say "he" than "she" or "they".

On the flip side, if you call a person with a female avatar "she" a lot of male players get offended at that, at least from what I've seen. So there's really no winning situation here.

*edit* maybe you could place what you'd prefer to be called in your LFG note? I'm not sure how many people actually look at those but I know I do.

Its understandable on both sides of the argument.
However, I just call everyone by their first name and don't use "he" or "she".
No one ever gets offended when called by their first name

If it's a male character use he/him, if it's a female character use she/her. If someone gets upset at you addressing their character by their gender, it's the only information you had to go on at that time. It's not unreasonable. At this point it's their issue, not yours (because you can rightly say, "Well if you wanted to be called "him" then you were within your rights to make a male character.").

I disagree. Way too many males play female characters for you to just assume they're female. And in my experience, they're way more apt to tell you "I'm a dude....". To me, if being called a "he" or "she" bothers anyone, it's on that person to correct people. You shouldn't expect the world to revolve around you. Either grow a thicker skin or simply make a Macro that says "I'm a girl" and make it your life's mission to let the world know.

I take offense to this. I am not random "guy" #173920. I am random "guy" #173902!

First time I met a grill playing a video game. Mind if put some steaks on your rack? Although with the proper seasoning, cut-up potatoes grilled in tin foil (or aluminum) are also quite tastey.

    Dear SE:

Most names in FFXIV are too fantastic to be gender indicative. Most of the equipment hides features too much to tell at first glance what gender a player is.

Please add and beside names in party list.
