This is why I harass people to elaborate and push trying to incorporate the good things from the game into the existing framework of the game. Everything has two sides to it, especially stuff from 11 since the experiences are so polarized. People can take the positive and incorporate it; the thing that people for FF11 don't seem to realize is that most people playing 14 don't care for the hours "lost", which is what turned me off from 11 in the first place, and the people against it are so turned off by the association with 11 that they don't want to hear any of it (especially since the descriptions are also incredibly vague, leaving anyone that has ill memories or does any research on the feature is going to immediately not want it when they see the "bad").Nostalgia has a tendency to cause you to remember the best of times without remembering the 'meh' times.
The NM claims, the exploration, the 'living' world...all wonderful. The hours spent mindlessly farming crap to try to afford food that was necessary for parties that often took hours to form then grind trash mobs for more hours to try to level a sub job...
That grind made people to actually be good at their job. It was rare to run in to crappy players at higher levels.Nostalgia has a tendency to cause you to remember the best of times without remembering the 'meh' times.

And those other things that you thought was boring.. and while sometimes they where. They made Vana'diel feel like a real world.
BTW, not sure why people think it's only nostalgia that makes people think highly of FFXI. Just see how stable the server population was over 7ish years. I have not seen another game with that kind of stable population, so it must have done something right, right?
Player A's character is a BLM and they have stockpiled a large amount of Tank or Healer gear through Greeding, shot this class from 1-50 through FATE grinding, and now has a fresh 50 in Coil gear. Your example of the grind does not work in this game due to the way leveling works and the fact that you can switch classes on the fly. The convenience combined with the way secondary classes are leveled end up causing this. That and the fact that you can faceroll dungeons up to 50 as long as everyone else is on the ball and isn't 10 levels behind in gear. That grind made people to actually be good at their job. It was rare to run in to crappy players at higher levels.

FF11's barrier of entry requires a large amount of commitment; not many are going to up and quit after actually making progress. A lot of people play games, watch TV series, follow books/comics, etc just because they enjoyed x part of it and stuck with it through the good and bad. They may genuinely not like other games and stick to what they know.

I played it for years and miss it dearly, but I don't want to play another game like it again nor do I think it's possible for another game to be like it again any time soon. The world has moved on. For most XI players, it was their first next-gen (at the time) mmo, as only EQ1 was the biggest fully 3D MMO at the time, iirc.
A slow grind like that might be good for our nostalgia, but I don't think it would see enough developer dollars these days to merit the time investment. You should expect, even after an expansion or two, for FFXIV to have a similar level0-levelMax time as it does today.
Can someone explain a bit more about how NMS/HMNMS/BCBSNMS/etc are different from the monsters that are in treasure chests? It sounds similar to me except the monsters can only be fought by the treasure hunt party even though others can see it as they pass by. And you always get loot from these.
I will agree that some FATEs are not exactly memorable... but some are challenging. I've seen countless people die to Stereopes, Gorgimera, and that Lazy Larry #$^*! out in East Shroud. Stereopes in particular... when his health refills, it's a sad sad thing. Behemoth and Odin... I could swear they used to be more difficult. I've got screenshots of a field full of dead characters. xD Kind of wish we had more like this.
I've heard about the ferry thing from XI players, that's the only thing I've heard of thus far that sounds like a fun side adventure to do.
Well, one thing that is different. Your adrenaline started pumping as soon as an NM/HNM you camp popped. Also, you had a high chance of getting awesome gear or expensive crafting ingredients.
Also, while people will say/do dislike competition on NMs. There is a reason why people like to compete in sports or other things.
Biggest difference though is that the NM/HNM wasn't yours until the name on it turned red. Until then, it was up for grabs.
EDIT: Forgot to add, HNM needed team work. it wasn't just zerg until it dies.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If this is Biz from FFXI please respond I can't make a player on your server cuz we're both on Legacy servers ... It's Relaeh. I don't know how to contact or your private msg you so this will have to work for now... I'll search for your recent posts in a day or 2 to see if you got this. Or .. if anyone on Hyperion could msg Solo Playa and tell him to read this that could help as well. Hope this wasn't annoying for you ppl to read!
Cooperation sounds great to me. Waiting days for something just to have another party snipe it out from under you so you get nothing, doesn't. I suppose this is just personal preference.Well, one thing that is different. Your adrenaline started pumping as soon as an NM/HNM you camp popped.
