I give you maaaaajor props for putting things to use in the end-game that are outside the realm of typical "this is 100% what you need to do no questions asked" thinking. I wish your party had been more receptive to that kind of gameplay. My biggest in-instance pet peeve is a total lack of communication right from the start, so I totally feel you.

I appreciate you saying that. It really could work well and even do better than a Summoner's pet easily in the end, so I fathom why it wouldn't be something cool to try out if it works effectively.
