I was on the other side of the fence on this discussion for the longest time. I played on PS3 and was clearing difficult content, so I didn't see a problem with it. I can play most content with ease. With the exception of Titan Extreme, which I attributed to connection speed. (1.5 mbps download)
However, after playing beta for PS4 this weekend, I discovered how wrong I was. I beat titan with ease. Turn 4 did not lag for me. Basically, I could clear the content itself way before now. I was just having to fight my PS3's processing speed. It had nothing to do with connection speed.
To make my point, I think PS3 needs to be dropped within the next month of subscription. If that is too soon, then make it by the end of this year at the latest. If Square Enix wants to retain their numbers to a small degree, they could offer a coupon for a percentage off a PS4 or something. I don't know, but I now see why PC players have tried to avoid us PS3 players so far in the game.
PS3 players are handicapped and their really isn't a fix for it. PS3 is outdated and should not have a future in this game. It's only holding PS3 players back for now, but PS3 will hold this game back in the future if we have to keep the content playable for PS3 players.

EDIT: Quotes from others with similar views and experiences with PS3 version. I understand I may be jumping the gun on the dropping support thing, but I honestly feel bad for the PS3 users. PS3 just can't handle the game as it currently is. If you are good enough to play on PS3 despite horrid lag due to processing power.. Imaging what you could do on PS4. ^.^

EDIT2:
Dropping support doesn't mean you can't play after they do. It means they wont get new content. If you aren't at endgame then it wouldn't affect you.
