Yoshi does not say that FFXIV will be like EQ, he uses EQ as a example to explain his view.

He says currently there are two standard MMO types, games like Wow, which are fast paced, has a lot of clicking and so on and then there is the old fashioned EQ type, EQ type is more focused on PVE and has a slower pace. Instead of killing stuff fast, the game focuses more on monster hate and crowd control.(gives more examples to explain the types but not gonna translate everything)

They go on to talking about how FFXIV fits the later and not the former in terms of types. Yoshi-P then explains that there are basic features, core elements that all MMO have, and the unique features are built on top of this core. Wow has a standard and then has the WoW unique talent tree built on top of it. For FFXIV they want to make sure that core is complete and when it is they will build unique features that are specific to FFXIV on top of this core to give it the FF Feel.

When we first saw gameplay videos of FFXIV in beta and read the interviews, we already knew it would be a slower paced game similar to FFXI, compared to WoW so i don't see why people sound so shocked now. as already mentioned by someone else, EQ experience is very similar to FFXI Experience, and i think in the interview they used EQ as the example to explain the 2 types of MMO standards and not FFXI since they didnt want to give the readers the impression that this game will be a copy of FFXI. Its similar to EQ in terms of gameplay stye, but if you have been playing this game for the last 6 months, then you should already know this.

Also thanks for doing the translations Reinheart.

YoshiP: That depends on how you take Raid, for example in WoW there are Raids that are for 5 players, 10 players, and also 20+ “Hard to get that much people” type of stuff. Stuff for hardcore gamers. I am thinking as raid is contents that requires strategy, unlike EQ (EverQuest) raid=large-scale PvE.

What I got from what he said, is that when he hears the word raid, he doesn't attribute it to the same style of raid as WoW or EQ. He's trying to redefine it, which I'm all for, but it just isn't the best idea when you are trying to draw people from other mmo's especially when their only experience in an mmo was with WoW.
He wants it to be synonymous with "YOU NEED TO PLAN TO WIN THIS" not "Oh lets get a bunch of people together to do this". (Again, my understanding of the translation only. Therefore it is COMPLETELY SPECULATION)
Theoretically, with this description however we could have single player 'raid' content, which I am more than okay with. (Think Maat)

You may want to read this again:

    権代氏:
     個人的に,いま自分達が直してる部分というのは,スタンダードなMMOのルールを作り直しているのだと思っています。FFXIVの場合,最初に道を間違えたというか……。
Gondai: Personally, what we are fixing now are bringing the rules of a standard MMO. In FFXIV… we took the wrong direction at start…
I'll give you props if you can debate against someone actually working on this game. "FFXI-2 whiners" are saying the same thing as Gondai just said, the basics of the game. Not a clone. FFXI had basic systems XIV did not.

So ironically, the "FFXI-2 whiners" are the winners.

I hope people will stop hyping 1.18 because of this. It will contain AA tweaks and that's about it.

It's sad to see people thinking that SE still has some MASSIVE PATCH lined up when the little tweaks that are trickling in are really all that they have finished and even that's being broken up to pieces because it's not ready yet.

They are not sitting on a pile of content and withholding it from us because there is nothing to withhold.

You do understand that FFXIV would never have 10-15mil players? they even know that why should they work on getting wow players then at the end only get 1-5% of wow players staying in ffxiv? then when FFXI stop where would all the ffxi players go to? ffxiv? am i right or wrong here? then they join ffxiv and they go wait a sec it feel like wow am out fuck this. Then SE would have to remake the game to feel more like final fantasy. This is what happen with tanaka he was trying to make it feel more western by doing this he fail and now ff fans want a final fantasy game not a wow game.

SE i hope you understand matter what you do at the end we want a final fantasy game not a dam wow clone.

[Removed by Moderator according to the FINAL FANTASY XIV FORUM Guidelines.]

People who wanted a "FFXI-2" are talking about basics systems (standards you know?) like how in FFXI you have linkshell management, basic search system, basic party system that worked, basic defined jobs, basic content concepts etc.

Which Gondai said they went the wrong route in not having the basic MMO standards at the start, yet FFXI did have them. Which is why it's even brought up, only so few people actually want a FFXI clone but more the basics that XI did right. Since its by the same company and the two games are in the same series is why XI is only even brought up mainly.

You need to re-read that. "Not a clone. FFXI had basic systems XIV did not." is what he said.

From what I've read 8/10 of the "FFXI-2 Whiners" don't physically want "FFXI with better graphics" they just want the solid battle system, the marketing system, the party search and party systems, and MAYBE the job system, added to the new lore/new world/new races.
You can debate whether or not this would change FFXIV into FFXI-2, but what it would do, would be not essentially giving the finger to the 9-10 year players of FFXI.
Most of the "whiners" actually put some variation of the following into their posts
"We don't want FFXI-2, but give us the base systems that made one game so very very very awesome, that I played it for 8-10 years."
    Which I wholeheartedly agree with.

You missed where I said "He's trying to redefine it, which I'm all for, but it just isn't the best idea when you are trying to draw people from other mmo's especially when their only experience in an mmo was with WoW."
In FFXI an 18 man party was called an Alliance, in WoW it would basically be a raid.
I said what I got from the translation is that he's trying to redefine the word. I never said it was a good idea, or that it was something I suggest.
In fact, nothing you said really has anything to do with what I said, Why was I quoted? xD

Also: Thanks a bunch for the translating Reinheart. I personally really appreciate that you take time out to do it.

    Hi Reinheart,

First off, a huge "THANK YOU!" for taking time out of your schedule to translate the entire interview, while losing sleep. Much appreciated! _(._.)_

Secondly, while there's a lot of information we already know, or that sounds a bit general, there are some interesting tidbits in there that add to my excitement about the game. Especially the part about 1.18 having a big storyline and Grand Companies playing a key factor with all 3 Nations.

This could be the start of some meaningful direction for the game that some people have been seeking (something that involves Gridania, Ul'dah and Limsa against a larger threat).

    I can't wait for 1.18 and 1.19 now.

I took that quote as to mean, "Every MMO has a certain set of features that FFXIV, for whatever reason, didn't come with, so we're adding that stuff in," not, "MORE FFXI FOR EVERYONE YAY!"

But then, I try to read between the lines.
