It was stuck on January launcher version and gave me the error when I hit Play to download the patch. Both of these pc's run win7, wired on same network - the only difference is the one that ran fine was a much later install and the one that didn't work started from Beta - I am wondering if I should install a new retail copy of ffxiv. That, as far as I can see, is the only difference.
    Thanks for this info I was able to fix it with this by forcing the launcher to update by doing the following.

    go to Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\ open up FFXIV_BOOT.cfg in word pad or notepad.

    you should see this

    <FINAL FANTASY XIV Boot Config File>

    <Version>
    Version 2
    Language 1
    Region 2
    EulaAgreement 1
    StartupCompleted 1
    B4EulaAgreement 1
    BootVersionCheckMode 0
    ConfigReset 0

    the line in bold is the key change the 0 to a 1 and it forces it to check version upon opening the launcher.

    After doing this it updated launcher and the game fine.

    Servers were up early for patch 2.2. Couldn't make heads or tails of the login version error. Scoured the entire thread and this was the only solution to work. Thank you so much!

    deleted it, remade, changed it, made copies of it, etc. etc. nothing has worked. Kinda frustrating.
