WoW had this. Rift has it too in a big way.
No. You need a GCD system to make such a mechanic viable. We do not have that in this game
we have timers and we have no queue.
Mages are already burdened with very harsh cast times in this game and very few Instant spells and
the instants they do get are not direct nukes or heals and they are on very long timers. Many instants have crazy long animations - Blood Rite is maybe the best example of just how crazy.
Picking a spot on the ground in the mass battles we currently fight ? You are kidding, surely ? Horrible idea, sorry.
Ouch. Vahzl is back to ignorance mode.Well if you want to play a game with wow's functions, and systems in place that wow has, go play wow.
Was fun while it lasted. This singular feature has really got nothing to do with WoW, it's just a component they use to improve planning in battle. Guild wars 2 is going to use ti heavily too because there's no PC targetting, if you want another example.
I don't get how any of this affects an AOE system? Why does a GCD need to be in place for it to be viable? What do the current cast times of spells have to do with it? (We already know they're scrapping the current toggle-aoe in exchange for actual AoE spells)WoW had this. Rift has it too in a big way.

What do animations have to do with it either? They could make new animations (they already have done for some things) if they situation calls for it.
What difference does picking a spot in the 'mass battles' we have make? Either you target something in an area and hope it hits as much or as little as you want, or you select the area and know what's going to happen.
I don't get it.

Let's keep this in a closet for now and let's wait for when they'll implement things like Meteor Storms, Brine Rain or what else, shall we. =)
After that, we can see if we need this.
I really...REALLY loved this visual effect in WoW, however...this is Final Fantasy.
I think i go for complete AoE chaos rather than having almost 99% CC lol
I wanna see more "Wtf was that?...oh shii1!" moments... like some poor no0b getting chased
by 30 coblyns running past my party,..and who knows, some nub-mage in my pt
accidently AoE and catch half of the coblyns & wipe our own pt...lol... Epic!
Huge fan of MPK...lol

I used to be Noomy...then i took shiva's Hail Storm to my knee...
Na im not back in ignorance mode (for that to be the case I would have had to have entered this mode in the first place). I just tire of reading thread after thread of "Wow has this, rift has that, FF should have it too". The game sucks, but uniquely sucks, and doesn't need functions from western MMo's to improve it other than mailboxes and transport.
AoE ground targetting wouldn't fit in with any Final Fantasy game I can recall (except maybe tactics). AoE's have always been strategically targetted on an NPC/Player, and also, imagine the aoe spam in cities if they were to allow this to happen. We might have self control, but the other 27 players don't.
Vahzl I agree. Its a feature that for the moment at least the dev team should not be burdened with. I am looking for the overall large scale changes they have to do. Once that is out of the way I do hope transport and mailboxes/residence is looked at. Then they can work on fleshing out content and tweaking things like this.Na im not back in ignorance mode (for that to be the case I would have had to have entered this mode in the first place). Noble Idea OP, but I don't think the time is right to be fretting over these types of features.
