I have no compassion for the guy not saying anything, is playing horribly, and holds back the rest of the group.
If I die in any game, first thing I do is check logs to see what killed me. If nothing is there, I ask my group.
No answer? Well its not like every game in existence doesn't have some sort of online community for discussion/FAQs/Guides.
I haven't played a video game in which I am the only one who has experienced an issue and there has been no answer for it online.
Compassion isn't conditional; either you want to help someone just because, or you don't. Like I said, some players have it, others don't. I can tell when people aren't putting forth an effort; when they haven't prepared for content; but that doesn't mean I won't say anything to help them. All that does is hurt yourself in the end. If you can explain a fight or recommend food buffs or a different rotation for their class, why wouldn't you? If helping someone improve really ruins your gaming experience, I'm sorry. If I can help someone, I will. I don't expect every other player to act the same way; that is ridiculous.
