Because I'm sure what we have now is the ultimate final form of it.
Because I'm sure what we have now is the ultimate final form of it.
When MMO developers deploy a system with a set infrastructure, that's generally a reliable benchmark for what the infrastructure is going to be for a long while to come. Forever? Maybe not forever, but once the Titanic has set sail in a particular direction, it isn't going to turn on a moment's notice and go some other direction altogether by the next patch.
Ultimate final form of it? No, probably not.
The form of it we'll be stuck with for at least the year to come? Almost certainly.
And I have to ask...what the heck good is this even? This reminds me of nothing so much as LotrO's housing system, only its worse because nearly nobody can just jump in and play with it. This system is out of the reach of most.
Individual player housing? Prolly eventually sometime or another. When? Do we even have a Soon™ to comedically reference on that, and given the demonstration made with this, what shall we expect for individual housing when/if it materializes?
They really ought to have looked at housing systems that are and have been before.
If they did, even in the smallest of ways, they ignored everything to do with all of it.
The widespread appeal of player housing is not, and never was, making a months-long raid out of getting to so much as look at it in the first place. Its about being able to create something that is vis-à-vis 'yours' in an overall shared environment.
City of Heroes understood this. RIFT understands this in spades. Ultima Online understood this. LotrO didn't understand this, but made it very easy and cheap for Joe Player to use the system for everything it was worth.
Square Enix could've upped all of them. This could've been an amazing ingredient that invited vast majorities of players to invest themselves up to their gleaming eyeballs in making little places and spaces that were all their own.
This? This looks like Square Enix tried to reinvent a car and, for some reason, thought that it'd be the best thing ever to make you and umpteen of your neighbors get on for a longhaul bankroll project for the 'get out and push' model.
Your net reward? A house you can't even customize worth beans.

A system is not made good by its potential; amazing potentials are wasted, unrecognized and unutilized everywhere every single day. Potential is a measure for nothing. It is the superfluous 'might have been' when taking what is and is not to account. It does nothing; it means nothing unless acted upon and the time to act upon it is always now. Not tomorrow, not 'Soon™' - Now.
TL;DR - Do it right or don't bother.
Last I heard was personal housing is due at 2.3 (not 100%). Which is crap. It should have been out first. Call me an optimist, but maybe it'll get better with the gardens, chocobo ranch, and airship workshop. Watch, those features are only available for FC houses...
I'm rather fond of the housing system they've got going here
You said player housing is about creating something that is yours and I agree! I also think the housing system they've included absolutely does that. Its hardly perfect. I'd like to see the item limit raised for one, but the foundation they've laid is awesome and they're already adding to that foundation with new furnishings and features.
I can see many ways the system can be improved on, but I don't see many ways that it failed.
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.
I suppose I'm simply spoiled by having played games like City of Heroes and even Rift.
This implementation of a housing system is clearly an open alpha cleverly thrown out there as a giant gil sink in its present form. In time, I'm sure they'll take what they learn here, improve on it, deliver individual player housing and maybe even make it player friendly across the boards.
I shall, in my mind, simply decide that housing hasn't actually released yet.
Its basically true for almost everybody anyway.

This is why it is the way it is, people like you are ok with tossing this excuse around whenever they say one thing, realize they don't have the time/manpower/talent to implement it, so they toss a few things together half done, throw it out to us and expect us to cheer at the awesome job they did, because you know, it will get better in the future.
everyone quoting this line and taking it seriously, please just stop. it is so painfully obvious that he is being sarcastic as hell XD or continue and just make me lol even more. Housing is what it is. Its not a final form, they pushed it out too early to test the waters because everyone wanted it so bad. now that its out everyone hates it because it isnt perfect as soon as its released. If you know nothing about business then you really have no right to complain about MMOs. they are a business, they have people that make the final say. The devs just go along with what they want.
