I agree, anyone who says the zone areas (not the difference between the large zones: Black Shroud, Thanalan, etc) are very different have been playing with their eyes closed, its a lot of the same texturing and color schemes.
Something after seeing work by SE (any FF title prior to) you would least expect. In fact I was not expected the world to look anything like it does based on A) the teaser trailers (I mean look at the trailer again and tell me where that zone they are looking at is) and B) the initial world map looks like it would have plenty of nice, various and visually stunning zones. I mean we get mention of a Volcano near Limsa Lominsa yet we have no access to it, nor can we really see it (unless someone has a good picture of an active volcano and I've just missed a good camera angle). Also there are no snowy zones, we have mountains, and usually they have snow (at least all the mountains I have seen and I used to live near them).
It really is a shame that all we have are: Desert, Cave-Forest, Plateaus, Mountain base, Marsh. And they claim that the world is as big as XI was at release, well I believe their were like 15-20 zones at the initial release of XI each with pretty different looks to them. Such a shame we only have five different terrain zones in XIV.
