Clearly you don't understand the cons enough.

If RMT's gobble up a ton of gil, they drive the value of gil up. Gil becomes scarcer and scarcer. The prices of expensive items like FC-lots will only drop to 50% of their original value which is significantly high still.

Removing their gil doesn't solve the problem they create. The value of gil will increase if we remove them but the gil sinks and etc stay constant. Meaning we fall further and further away from such features as they gobble gil and GM's remove them. Even if they aren't removed, that gil is trapped with them, meaning they pretty much have removed that gil anyways from the market system. Now we have to readjust those values of gil sinks which now involves re balancing the entire game.

The cons in this situation are far more greater then you think.

This is why we don't see buyback systems as a predominate system in P2P MMOs, were virtual currency is weighted a little heavier then F2P MMOs.

Like I said, Its a convenient feature with a huge drawback.
