From what I got from the retro-look of Final Fantasy XIII is a single game that was broken up in parts(for reasons unknown: Discretion is advised). The plot in itself should've been of one Final Fantasy release with exception the battle systems may differ.

If it were SquareSoft, this would've been a hit-game that made itself a classic with no defacing of value. Now with every Final Fantasy release, it seems predictable.

Too bad after chapter 5 or so in Bravely, the game becomes extremely repetitive and boring all the way until the end. Before that though - all good.

Still, I'll take it over FFXIII (or FFX) any day of the week.

Dude, I'm totally with you on this one.

I've become so disappointed in ARR, that the other night I fired up the Wii and bought FF6 from the Wii Shop.

So much fun to play this game on a giant screen

I agree. Though I don't doubt there are people interested, there are many more who would just be put off by low graphics. Hell, even old fans of some games can often be seen over the web saying "I tried to go back to play XXXX, but I can't stand the graphics any more".

I've seen this very often, and if even people who liked the games and know how good it is can be put off by lower graphics, let's not even try to convince newer generations who never played 2D games.

And even in Crisis Core, I KNEW what was going to happen to Zack but it was still powerful. I still think FFVIII has one of the best stories and I loved every second of that game. And when Cecil became a Paladin for my first time, I felt like I just attained God Mode. When Kain betrayed me for HIS first time, I felt like I lost a friend. Many of SE's games don't have that same power they used to have 5-10, even 15 yrs ago. At least not for me.
It seems the quality you value most is narrative.

Crisis Core, for example, had an extremely boring and repetitive gameplay, and was made up of a succession of corridors with zero choices whatsoever.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely *loved* it. But only because it had a very, very good narrative (and a good dose of fan service)
I mean, narrative was the only quality of the game, and people already knew how it ended. Succeeding in making us play till the end shows how good it was.

The illusion of choice is a very important quality for a RPG.
You're right about the fact that you don't necessary have a lot more choices in older games, but what is important is that it feels so.
I've stopped playing FF games after I gave up on X without even finishing it, because it felt too linear for my taste. I've tried a bit of later FFs at a friend's place, but never liked it for the same reason.

Actually, I remember reading an official communication somwhere that said if they were to remake FF VII it would take them like 3 years.
I don't remember the details, but basically, they said it would take too much ressources/time to be worth it.

It's not the graphics that made those games better (for those that prefered them to newer ones). It's what was lost in the process of adapting games to the current technology standarts.
I'm not sure what this missing "something" is, but simply developping a 16 bit RPG is not the key, imho.

EDIT: Actually, the higher realism of the graphics may be partly responsible to this feeling of linearity. If player get a feeling of a more realistic immersion, the expectations are elevated as far as freedom goes, the limitations become more obvious. Things that might have gone unnoticed on a 16 bit game, might become obvious with realistic graphics/controls.
Not so sure, though, it's just a thought.

The thing is many of these jrpg games are mostly available in handhelds, namely nintendo.

From whay I've seen they all end up looking chibi/ cutesy that may turn people away.

Take a look at ff12 revenant wings.

There's also the market to deal with too. Sadly most people want good graphic especially if it's gonna cost 60 dollars.

Now, SE will experiment with drakengard 3 to see if localizing more jrpg will be worth it

Haha yeah thats what I meant just you put it so much better

Its the illusion of choice in VII/VIII/IX/XII that hides the linear plot progression/world exploration better then what X and XIII did.
The problem with those two was lack of side quests/side stories to get into and break up the main storyline, it felt like a grind - one that worked for me as I loved the characters/world/story and the visuals (orignal XIII still one of best looking games IMO) but a grind none the less.

Oh you should of tried XII that was as close to an MMO/open world your gonna get in an offline FF game, I racked up 168hrs on 1st run and still didnt get everything or level cap!
That had a great "illusion of choice" after first few hours, could wonder off and explore regions, go on monster/hunters quild quests - so awsome
(Also Devs. if your seeing this please do a HD remaster of XII for PS3 before end of its shelf life as one big send off for the old boy, like the original XII was for PS2)

Thanks for the advice. I never played XII at all, I'll look into it
