If you don't have anything better to do with your time and/or money then I agree that $12 for FFXIV is a really good deal. I think you'll find though that there's stiff competition in the game business for your $12, which means getting something better than what FFXIV has to offer currently isn't an unrealistic expectation.
As a consumer, time is only relevant to value and/or enjoyment. A lot of people are here because of the FF name. It holds a certain appeal to it that most other franchises don't have. A lot of people will value the FF name alone in giving their own views. Is it right of them to do so? Most definitely. Again, time is only relevant to value and/or enjoyment. It doesn't matter if someone "deludes" themselves into liking something others may not. A huge number of people hate FFXI, while many of us loved it for the reasons people hated it.

Bottom line is if you want to play something, play it. If you value something that others don't, value it. Who gives a damn if you're spending time on something that you enjoy. If you're enjoying the experience, it's worth the time and money. Playing these games should never be viewed as a contract or job. They might require commitments of time similar to that of a job, but if it's bringing about something you want to enjoy or experience, it's probably worth it.
