Eorzea feels like a world with no teeth.

I don't fear the world, there is no where I can't travel on the back of my trusty steed and and be afraid I might die. As I ride through the beastmen strongholds I look down on the pitiful attempts these insignificant creatures make to harm me. Their blades and arrows bouncing off of my armour with little or no consequence.

In 1.0, even at max level, to get to the stronghold boss you needed a party, and wiping was an option if you didn't carve your way through fast enough. I remember travelling to the far out of the way aetherite points to collect the exploration achievements and having to sneak past level 75 - 99 mobs. In XI travelling into any high level zone unprepared (sneak and invis pots) you were gambling with your life.

I personally felt this level of danger gave the world character, gave me a sense of adventure. I felt in awe of the world, I feared and respected it. Right now I just look at it with a sense of indignation, and contempt for the pitiful enemies who think they pose me any sense of threat. Even the imperials have been reduced to a dog that is all bark and no bite where as in 1.0 the imperial stronghold was deadly!

    Totally adorable and appropriately relevant.

I was just doing hunting log for my monk in Castrum and was feeling a bit silly, raiding over the place with my chocobo. Because an adventurer and a chocobo can take over a whole imperial stronghold, no problem! Didn't help that the imperial soldiers were very far apart from each other, so it was pretty easy to just "sneak" past the ones I didn't need for the log.

I will forever remember from LotRO the lvl 30-40 orc camp that I had no hope of soloing, duoing or even trioing. Would need 6 people to get around the place. Unless you were a stealth class, ofc, but even then it was far from quaranteed you'd survive even a 1vs1 fight.

    Just sayin'. ^^

There are level 70 mobs out there, somewhere. Just gotta wait for the new areas, hopefully ._.

2.0 eorzea is too small and has waaaay too much civilization. Elaborate buildings everywhere. No wilderness. It feels like Eorzea shrunk to about 10% it's original size.

Mobs are only Lv.49-50 max. If you want some real challenge, tackle some of those high level boss fate alone that's all over Eorzea. If not take on this guys by yourself...

Haha sure I'd love to, you know, once he stops crashing the zone on my server with 90k disconnects.

Fates are events that occur within the world, while they may add a temporary challenge they do not ad any real danger to the world, you can ride through a fate without any cause for alarm even if it's higher level. What I'm talking about in this thread is that the actual persistent world showing no real threat once you have reached max level. If I wanted the kind of challenge you talk about, I could just go complete the PrimalX fights again, or go slay Twintania once more.

What I'm talking about is having a world that is exciting, and challenging to explore. Not a mild walk through the park on warm summer's afternoon.

    I agree with the OP.
There should be places where things can actually kill you if you are not carefull.
At it is now I can stand in a bunch of lv50 mobs all attacking me and kill them with little effort.
The lack of sneak and invisibility mechanics and different aggro mechanics are something I miss too.

The example with the Castrums is good.
The whole continent fears the garlean empire but you can go in and raid a whole castrum solo?
That would be a good place to put really strong mobs and maybe let them come out of the castrum and patrol them through an area, so you have to watch out for them while traveling.

Not that bad if the zones are interesting.
And you won't run to the other side of the map anyway if there's nothing there for you. Or do you run to the SE corner of Mor Dhona or SW corner of Coerthas often?

I do miss running around screaming in sheer bloody terror in Mor Dhona, back when it was a deadland where the dead go to die.
