How did the community become this toxic?

I think the biggest problem to the community is the Duty Finder. It basically means you are never held accountable if your an asshole and there is no community building. I have met some really nice people and wish I could have added them to my FL, but nope! Different server.

I'd rarely see a person leave a group in the early years of WoW after a few wipes (I stopped after TBC) and FFXI. Now we wiped once on the first boss of Haukke Hard? Tank leaves immediately, and really there is no punishment for it outside of a dinky 30min lockout.

I really enjoy the duty finder, amazing tool, but it does allow those few who really want to be jerks to just well be jerks. Normally you can just brush it off, but when you have one of those bad days and seem to run into all the jerks or annoying tools I sit here and pray for a cross-server blacklist.

So i played FFXI for 5 years and WoW for 2. Am I a WoW player?

WoW's new expansion was just announced. Those players are already on their way OUT of FF14, not coming in.

Some people like myself find nothing to do in WoW atm so they are playing some other games until expansion comes out.

it's people not the games.

Every MMO has a worse community than the last one no matter how the game is designed to be.
Back in the FFXI days people would help each other for inordinate amounts of time pretty happily and shun people that exploited mechanics.
nowadays there's a larger group defending exploits and treating each other like garbage than people that realize it's supposed to be a community

The vast majority of the ones that advertise assistance for a price are usually the weakest of the group that helped them get to where they are. So to make them look legit they have to rope in a few of the ones that helped them previously with offers of gil.
Easiest way to prove this is if the group fails the leader/advertiser will start insulting people and calling them bad.
Not sure where this inflated idea of self worth came from but it is very prevalent in WoW.

FFXI had a different community because it was a completely different game. The demands on the individual player were nonexistent, it was completely up to group activities, and most of the time each player was only there to use one ability or simply because you needed sheer numbers. FFXIV has no such group-play requirements, it is instead nearly all up to individual skill, and like WoW, demands constant attention and reflexes to perform your role well and to stay alive.

Everyone with rose tinted goggles talking about FFXI need to accept that it was not even a remotely challenging game to play, therefore it became more about the socializing experience only because you needed other people to party with.

FFXI: Quantity > Quality
FFXIV/WoW: Quality > Quantity

You perceive people as 'toxic' because other players hold you to some standards, that's all. Unfavorable people exist and they do play video games. You will not get along with 100% of people you meet in real life, and you will not get along with 100% of people in the virtual world either. Grow thicker skin and step out of your bubble and then people won't be so "toxic".
