Crafted gear being the best gear in the game forces you to use rmt, which is the exact reason why I quit playing ffxi, because you were forced to buy gil to progress through the game. The day the game becomes like that I quit playing.

Forced to RMT. . . Seriously? That is a personal decision which is made by people who cannot or will not put in the effort. It forces you to farm, or craft on your own; it does not force you to RMT. People who use RMT always try to find reasons to justify it.

I think what he meant was back in the day certain pieces of gear forced you to compete with pretty much full alliances for a mob that spawned once a day and had like a 5% chance to drop the item. Or you could gamble on your luck to get seals to try and do the BCNM/KSNM run for it that had a 5% chance for it to drop. Shit drop rates coupled with shit timers for NM's were a huge bane of that game.
