Yes there are probably people with that much money, but aren't they just a very small portion of the population?

People need to realize that that's exactly who the highest price houses are designed for, the elite few who can afford it. The bigger the house and nicer the land, the fewer people who should have access to it.

As for smaller houses:

The reason donations aren't higher is because people don't want to give their gil, not because they don't have it. I'm sure plenty of these "poor" free companies have members rolling around in millions of gil. But who wants to put their own personal wealth into something for other people that won't even be theirs?

They're affordable, people just don't want to pay for someone elses stuff with their own money.
