The economy in XI was downright atrocious because items didn't bind when used. Until you were at cap, leveling a profession was a loss the entire way, and a big one at that. The things you made sold for a fraction of what the materials cost. Absolutely everything you could make while leveling was sold at a loss, because there were years upon years worth of equipment flooding the market that thousands of players had made. Equipment that never left the economy unless you sold it to a vendor for even less. So what was left to make a profit on? Consumables. What happens when everyone makes consumables? No profit.

In XIV however, you can make a profit on almost anything while actively leveling, because all of the gear you make eventually leaves the system. Somebody buys it, it binds to them, and the only way they get rid of it is via vendor or materia. Either way it's gone for good, which creates a demand for more of those items, meaning prices stay in the profitable range only until there isn't anyone left to buy them.
