couldn't have said it better myself. +1The point of NM implementation in a game like this isn't to be fun.
why? Because killing the same mob is only fun for so long.
The point of NMs is to give players something to do which takes time and effort but has good rewards.
These NMs are short-term oriented fun. They will entertain someone for 1 or 2 days or maybe 2 or 3 "NM runs". After that spamming 1 and killing the same thing 40 times without any drops gets boring.
FFXI's NMs on the other hand created a long-term challenge. You had to spend time camping them, some gave cool titles which lets you show off, many gave really good equip which could then be sold, many were camped by multiple ppl so it was a "challenge". etc.
An MMO needs NMs like ffxi's. Sure they could be changed and tweaked a little. But FFXIV's NMs are essentially useless.
It has to do with the style of the game.
FFXI was not grinding-based. Yes you had to grind one or 2 jobs but they were all unique, required parties and teamwork, etc. But there were also tons of things to do outside of grinding. You could spend hours camping an nm, you could do interesting quests that take you to hard to reach places not many people go, you could actually farm stuff that had value, etc.
FFXIV is grind central. Instead of creating things to do outside of grinding, it minimizes anything non-grindable (ex nms) so you get done with them fast and can go back to grinding. This is probably going to be the main reason why XIV will never be a huge success. Unless they drastically change things.
