No thanks. I'm hoping this escapade with Lightning is something of a one-time thing and we never see another attempt at cross marketting of that level again throughout XIV's life.
If a friend of mine is an example of the mentality towards Cloud, it's because he's a soldier with a really big sword. That apparently makes him instantly awesome or something.
and if he was female people would be saying how he ruined the game and how he's just a horrible mary sue.
They would have to have a good reason as to why such characters appear in this world though. I can see Tactics characters appearing in this world before FF7 characters to be fairly honest (given that there was a poll begging for a bunny race *laughs a little*).
But I would only agree on anymore character cross overs if they do a better job then what they did with the fates this time... Still trying to figure out why my character was sad to see Lightning leave when I might have talked to her for a few moments? Tops.
I think it's pretty hilarious people are hating on Cloud and Sephiroth and yet didn't seem to have problem with an infinitely less popular character (Lightning) whose appearance made even less sense. At least Sephiroth is godlike already so he doesn't need help to show up in other universes. Again, if you have to do a dumb cameo event, there's no way you can beat Cloud and Sephiroth, who have been the icons of the Final Fantasy universe for the last 10 years or so. At least these two characters have real fanboys, not imaginary ones like Lightning so they had to use NPCs instead.
Every complaint I see thrown at Lightning "she's a bland characterless solider who keeps getting thrown in our face" is the same damn thing for Cloud. He's a pretty damned boring character but I wouldn't have a problem with a FF 7 event in game because there are plenty of people who'd love it and I'm not an entitled dick like some.
Popularity trumps character design. Cloud is popular. Lightning is not. This is very obvious with any minimal research. Life isn't fair, even for fictional characters.Every complaint I see thrown at Lightning "she's a bland characterless solider who keeps getting thrown in our face" is the same damn thing for Cloud. He's a pretty damned boring character but I wouldn't have a problem with a FF 7 event in game because there are plenty of people who'd love it and I'm not an entitled dick like some.
You said you thought it was funny people hating on Cloud and Sephiroth while liking the less popular Lightning. I think its funny liking Cloud when the only thing that separates him from Lightning in my mind is breasts and a big sword. Some people seem to legitimately enjoy 13 what do you get out of destroying their enjoyment? Some people enjoy the story in this game what do you get out of constantly saying how much you think it sucks? How is your life improved by saying how much you hate Lightning?
To the many people saying Dissidia is contradictory and potentially "makes no sense", if you actually PLAY through Dissidia and the prequel, [012]duodecim, the reason all of the assorted Final Fantasy characters from accross the titles are in one place, and why everything is happening the way it is. (I won't go into detail for those who don't want the plot spoiled.)
Square Enix has a funny way of wrapping up things half of the time when it comes to the whole "cross-title" thing, especially when it came to Dissidia, but I definitely enjoyed the plot, personally, and before I had played through both titles, had also felt kind of "wtf?" towards the seemingly crazy amount of logical fallacies.
That's a little more difficult with FFXIV:ARR. They can't go throwing in random characters at will that could alter the story of the game and vice versa, as ARR already has an established storyline that wouldn't accomodate for all of that (like Dissidia series did).
Popularity, eh?

According to this, Lightning is the most popular female Final Fantasy character. This is an official Square Enix poll held in Japan, and is current as of January 2013.
EDIT: An English link which corroborates this: http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/0...antasy-series/
Japan disagrees with your notion of her being "not popular". And so do I. Unless you then want to say that female character popularity is nowhere near male character popularity, which then judging by posts here, makes Tifa or Yuna "unpopular" as well.
If anyone else is interested:
6. Terra (she's called Tina in Japan)
7. Serah
8. Garnet
8. Faris
10. Rinoa
10. Rydia

He was a lot better in VII. After he got ever mako poisoning (which is a petty reasonable reason to be fucked up) he took charge and fought Sephiroth even though he knew there was only a small chance he could win.
She was the embodiment of the "Strong female character that needs no man" and that's an incredibly boring route to take the character.Every complaint I see thrown at Lightning "she's a bland characterless solider who keeps getting thrown in our face" is the same damn thing for Cloud.
