Hopefully. From a programming perspective the workaround should be simple: if you left a vanity slot filled and a vanity slot blank to one of the multi-part gear pieces, just have the blank slot appear as if you had nothing equipped there (example: if you equip a shirt but no helmet in vanity for a hooded robe, the head would just appear like you had nothing equipped there).

Or some kind of stand in "modesty shirt/pants" model if Square doesn't want players using the system to go topless/pantless (example: equipping a helmet but no shirt in vanity for a hooded robe make it appear you're wearing a lvl 1 crafter shirt if you want to be prudish about it).

It might have a problem in the other direction. If you wanted to appear to wear a shirt and hat, I don't know that you would be able to apply both of those appearances onto the single cowl item. Since the cowl is a chest-slot item, it may well only accept chest-slot appearance modification. It's not clear if we'll be able to apply two different appearances (a shirt and a hat) onto the same item.

Another reason why the re-skinning system is just horrible. I seriously hope they rethink their plan if that's what they intend.

My post explained an easy work around to what you just said. You must have read what I was implying backwards.

If you're wearing a cowl then equip a chest piece with no head piece for vanity, you would appear wearing a chest piece with no hat. Any missing spaces on gear overwritten with vanity like a cowl can just be displayed as "unequipped"

Petition to lift the silly dye restrictions:

Just say NO to vanity slot restrictions:

The point is, if Squeenix is going with a re-skinning type system, you are applying appearances to gear, not item slots. In the case of cowls and other two-slot gear items, there's only one piece of gear to apply an appearance to. How can you apply two different appearances (body and hat) to one item?
