I did the whole chain and it was underwhelming.
I'm thinking this was just a marketing ploy, an advertisement for FF13 w/e.

Does any remember the cross-over character in FF: Tactics? Remember the awe you felt when you saw him? I do. It just wasn't the same when I saw Lightning, however. Not saying this was a terrible idea but saying I was left with more questions than awe.
eh... it was officially called a cross-promotion. of course it was just marketing
edit:
you know, I just did something I never thought of doing
I went to amazon.de (Germany) and checked the ratings
FFXIII has a rating of 3 1/2 (360) or 4 (ps3) stars. how the hell does that equal to 'everybody hates the game'?
granted the ff titles up to X had higher ratings (except x-2, it 'only' has 4 stars as well)
but I'm fairly sure that's still related to the nostalgia factor, because most of these reviews were written waaaaay after the game originally came out and I'm pretty sure most people who didn't like FFvi-ix 10 years ago will never bother to write a negative review about it.

FATE was lame indeed, but FF13 was already lame to begin with.I do have to admit - this was pretty lackluster. But all-caps isn't going to help your point. Neither is making this thread, actually. All you're doing is stating that you hated the content. This has about as much weight as the average YouTube comment. How is this thread going to be anything but one gigantic argument based on an angry rant?
I know how it feels to get angry over something something meeting expectations. But this isn't the right way to express it. This thread can cause nothing but trouble. So I implore you - I beg you - to delete your statement and request this thread to be closed.
Considering that the last event FATE had a company of naked suicidal idiots charging a giant bomb for no reason whatsoever, I think we can safely say that these events aren't meant to make a lot of sense.
Plus, FFXIV is hardly the first FF game to have an inexplicable cameo from a popular character. Cloud, Aeris, and Balthier were in FF: Tactics, for example. That didn't make any sense either.
(Reply may contain spoilers.)
I actually thought Lightning's story here made quite a bit of sense. Granted, this is coming from someone who loves FFXIII and FFXIII-2, having beaten FFXIII twice and FFXIII-2 once with all fragments and bonus content completed.
Through out the series, Lightning in particular is constantly thrown around by the gods or godlike beings to be tested for one reason or another. Considering her manipulation abilities of time and space, it isn't far fetched that she would end up in an alternate reality/world for a short time to attain the blessings of whatever god is messing with her now. Fighting Chaos itself through out the FFXIII-2 story (In the form of Caius), it isn't far fetched at all that she would be awoken from her eternal slumber to fight off the Aspect of Chaos that found its way into Hydaelyn/Eorzea.
The only thing that confuses me about the entire thing is....why is she in her FFXIII clothes?
She SHOULD be in her valkyrie guardian outfit.
That's the only aspect of this entire quest line that I simply do not understand and makes no sense to me.
They could have still given her old suit as a reward, but for her to wear her old suit just leaves me at a loss.
Edit:
At the start of FFXIII-2, Lightning's suit is erased by the Goddess Etro and replaced with a stunning Valkyrie outfit, that makes her look more like a paladin.
Edit 2:
At the end of FFXIII-2, after witnessing the end of time and Serah's death + final goodbye, Lightning Crystallizes herself until a time comes where she can win against Chaos.
This is where Lightning Returns enters the picture.

I got extra stuff and a new hairstyle, good enough for me. It's a cross-promotion. Don't know what you were expecting.
I don't think you understand what content means. If you're talking about quality of content, that is something else entirely. This is an event, no different from the halloween event. Especially since it's playable for a limited-time only.
