Lightning Fates are a disgrace to the series, and a broken promise? SPOILERS

Listen, if you haven't done the fates/quests yet, don't read this, there will be spoilers. (Though honestly there isn't anything to spoil)

THIS FATE IS TERRIBLE.

Basically, there is almost no story involved, and the reason why Lightning is ultimately revealed to be here, is just stupid. She basically comes to Eorzea, says 'Hello', then 'Goodbye', her appearence in FF14 doesn't affect the story in FF14 and it doesn't add anything to FF13 either, basically making it POINTLESS. I don't have a link but I could have swore, at some point or another Yoshi P, even border lined promised not to bring FF characters into this game without a good reason and story to back it up. Well if he did say it, then he sure as hell broke it, because this fate has absolutely NO point.

Quite frankly SE, if this is the best you can do, then please do not bring any other FF characters into this game. When you said you were bringing Lightning into the game, I had high hopes for this content, but now I'm left with bitter disappointment, and from a marketing stand point you bring us ZERO reasons to buy the next FF13 game. Final Fantasy series is renowned for its story content above all else, and this just a disgrace. I was hoping for a real story driven quest line that gave a good reason for Lightning to be here, and a good reason for Eorzea to be involved with her, but we got neither, just some 'throwbacks'!

If FF14 continues this trajectory with adding Final Fantasy characters for absolutely no reason or purpose, this game will go from Yoshi P's "Theme" park, to a "Circus".

Final point:

SE, DEVS, YOSHI, PLEASE DO NOT TARNISH ANY OTHER OF YOUR FINAL FANTASY CHARACTERS BY PULLING THEM INTO THIS GAME EVER AGAIN UNLESS YOU REALLY PUT SOME QUALITY EFFORT INTO IT AND NOT THIS SHAMEFUL WORK.

I know...that's how me and my friend felt after we finished it... I even asked my FC if this was really the last quest.

I thought that it really was a OK event. I wouldn't say it was fantastic...but what are we comparing it to? It's a 'event' so...that means:

The Fair, with the cascadier swimsuits, so now I can run around half naked...sure why not!

Halloween event, um so yea, ghost costume? sure, I feel like a ghost sometimes, no one notices I'm around....PERFECT!

and now, Lightning comes to Eorzea... why does she come again? I don't care, I just want her clothes!

On a side not though? Yes, you were right on this point, it was totally a commercial for the Lightning games! And being that, it induces a slight groan from everyone just like seeing Superman go to IHOP in 'Man of Steel'. Cause well, did they reeeeeally need to do that? um... yes they did, cause it made them money! /nods

It becomes OK after we compare the event with seasonal ones... just sad.

But the fate copied FFXIII so well. It had a start, no story, and then you were at the end before you know it.

But this game had it better, cause Hope wasn't around.

You can't expect much from 13.

I think it sums up the FF13 series quite well. Short, nonsensical, monotonous, and rushed.

I like these, because this Fate basically reaffirmed everyone who didn't like FF13 to begin with (though I personally thought FF13 was pretty alright!). It was a lost opportunity for SE. Instead of maybe getting people interested in the series or the new game, they actually disgraced...a disgrace as they put it?

I do have to admit - this was pretty lackluster. But all-caps isn't going to help your point. Neither is making this thread, actually. All you're doing is stating that you hated the content. This has about as much weight as the average YouTube comment. How is this thread going to be anything but one gigantic argument based on an angry rant?

The whole point of the Lightning FATES were to try and gain hype for 13-3. They've sunk a lot of money into the 13 series and it's been a pretty big flop since the release of the first one. Collab events like these are pretty common in Japanese games. PSO2 had a Border Break collab that came out leading up to the Border Break Union update for the arcade which involved fighting a Cougar mech, some furnishing for your room and costume parts for the robot race. Their Lord of Vermilion arcade card game has had quite a few cross overs too. All which had zero impact on story/lore to the games. There's more out there but those are just a couple I know of.

Adding lore/story with this event was never the purpose all it was, was an event to hand out some vanity stuff and build hype for a game.
Here's a link to the pv that showed the collab to Border Break Union when it was announced. Since then they've done a ton of other stuff like Fate/Stay, Madoka costumes and so on.

In an entire public forum filled with threads about the event, full of people expressing the same thing you are expressing right now, you decide to start a thread of your own so you can vent your opinion in all-caps. I'm not saying you can't start a thread or express your opinion. You can speak your mind however you want. What I am saying is that this is unnecessary, does not promote healthy discussion, and is completely childish.

By that I mean, they promised that the characters would come into this world and left it in a way that made sense.
What happens between coming and leaving is irrelevant. It's usually insignificant so that it doesn't affect the story.

The excuse they used for Lightning could be used for just about every single character in the Final Fantasy Universe, with a little tweaking. It wasn't creative or original, and it didn't have any purpose. If you are right, and there promise was simply that, then there wasn't a point. When it was first announced FF13 was making an appearance, players were concerned that it would either butcher the story, or be absolutely pointless. And sure enough, the absolutely pointless turned out to be the case. A cheap gimmick, and nothing more. I was hoping for something a lot deeper, and I feel it was a missed opportunity.Even the scholar weapon lacked creativity, simply a bunch of boomerangs put together? Could they not ask anyone from the design team of FF13 what a book might look like in their world? If they can't do it right, I just rather them do nothing at all. It cheapens the entire game.
