    We have still areas (and not every area is instanced). In FF XIII it was corridors.
    As example, just imagine every zone in ARR would be designed like 1.0 Black Shroud.

    like i said thats not a open world map, just a small instanced zone, i bet you wouldnt take more than 3 or 4 minutes to run from one side to the other....

    compare it to other mmo's out there and the scale of even instanced areas in those games are much much bigger(aion), or they just have one single gigantic zone(wow, rift, lineage 2)... you play in small areas and wheny ou open up your map you see a gigantic portion fo the map where you cant access, dont tell me everywhere besides where we are playing is just a black hole where nothing exists... they should have made all areas into one large map, and fill in the remaining blank zones... even if you didnt have to do anything in those new areas, at least you would have a big world to explore and room to implement further content in the future... hopefully we can see something like this in the future , though i doubt it since the playstation probably cant handle the stress of such scenaries, once again pc players get shunned by console players...
