I'd rather have scripted story instances with NPCs, that worked like job quests do. And then if you wanted to get gear you could use the DF to group with others and run those instances again, without the cutscenes or story elements getting in the way.

That would also allow the devs to use the instances in more creative ways for both the story and farming versions of it.

But maybe that's just me, because so far I've NEVER had actual fun doing those DF instances. As evidenced by how I cringed and cursed the DF when I found out I had to queue to enter the Praetorium. Which I haven't finished yet because I don't have the patience to wait for more than half an hour to even enter the place. (Estimate wait time is always more than 1 hour)
I actually like that dungeons are part of the main story. I find the main story to already be too isolated from the multiplayer and rest of the game, for the most part. If I wanted a solo-only story with NPC party members, I'd play any of the single player FFs.

As far as people running into cutscene hecklers, the best way to ensure a pleasant dungeon experience, whether that means watching cutscenes or skipping them, is to run with friends. Multiplayer and experiencing Final Fantasy with friends is what an FF MMO should be about isn't it?
