Which FFXI did you play? The one I played everyone went to exp at the same places, so over 80% of the world was empty. And the moment people got the option to level faster in Abyssea, or keep partying outside, everyone moved to Abyssea because they didn't care at all about the open world. I'd be surprised if there is more than 10 people per server who are obsessed with FFXI.
