There was a whole month in 2007 when 2 handed weapon STR formula was messed up, THF could SA from the front, and BRD Zurka was as fast as flee. And dont even get me started on how often PLD was changed.
    OMG a whole month!>!?!?!?! wholly crap !!!!!

The game has been running for 10 years, its considered a success in every sense of the word. SE only #!@$ed up once and that is FFXIV.

They want a WoW sized subscription base, $12.00 x 12months x 5,000,000users = $720,000,000.00 a year. The game would pay itself off roughly twice in a year.

That's what I'd expect from any video game company, or companies in general. When making a product, you have to think about how much of it is going to be sold, and how much profit you could make. You can't just have an idea and go along with it, it has to be analyzed and tested, perhaps even surveyed, to get an idea of Need vs Cost.

With a Video Game company, you have to take an accurate guess at how many people are going to enjoy the game you are going to make. This is why video game companies have to think ahead of their own time, and in this case, it seems as if they have found a soft spot and are going to do what it takes to get this game out asap. They are not telling us what it is exactly, because well, that's SE for ya. They want everything to be a surprise.

Admittedly I'm only skimming some of the posts but I didn't see anyone talking about Tanaka really. But you illustrate the same worrisome point: we all know Wada is bad for SE and SE has only seen a net loss since he took charge as CEO and kinda pushed out the original Squaresoft dudes. That being said, he's still CEO, and unless something changes and he is forced out, he's going to be the CEO when this game is being developed.

I'm less worried about Tanaka being the developmental head as I am for Wada again being impulsive and demanding the game get shipped before its ready. Wada tries to take too many shortcuts.

But a huge problem with FFXIV was how they treated the beta testers. Honestly SE conducted themselves in just about the worst PR fashion imaginable as this game was being developed. There are videos upon videos of them saying junk like "The beta testers have been asking for these features but we believe that the game should take this course regardless" and just kinda ended up brushing off the beta testers with their overconfident nonsense. I do hope they fix the game and I think Yoshi-P could be the man to do it, but I am absolutely not feeling "Oh poor SE" when I look at the state of the game and the lost money, and then take a look back at those overconfident developer interviews earlier last year.

WoW was a fluke. Blizzard knew they were making a fun game, they had *no idea* that it would blow up into what it is today. But the MMO market is oversaturated now; too many games and too many players with pre-existing loyalties to said games. Do we think there's another 5,000,000 users out there that are dying to get into the MMO market that currently aren't playing an MMO? I don't think so. This new game would need to kill WoW entirely to get anywhere near those numbers... and we all know that isn't going to happen.

To say Wow was a fluke, is stretching it a bit, sure they had no idea it would end up being the monster it is today, but they knew they had a solid game, that was nothing like the other games when it was released, and was heavily catering to a more cusual friendly while still keeping it's hardcore aspects, i think it was more of a "At the right time in the right place" kind of thing.

Anyways, more on topic, they should do a Mana series MMO, it's the serie's that can really hit a MMO theme, really nicely(Tho IMO DQ can do it better, they can market those slimes as pets etc etc)

WoW was am extreme risk, they departed extremely far from what the Standard was for a MMO. Most people though it would fail hard because it was not a what a mmo was suppose to be when being compared to FFXI, EQ1, and Linage which where the mainstream mmos.

WoW success was great marketing (seriously they spend 100s of millions a year on it) and drawing in the casual crowd into mmos. There will never be a game as solid sub wise as WoW, unless there is another genre defining game.

They said they'd announce the name sometime before the end of their current fiscal year.

My guess is that if they are even trying to manage another MMO, it is probably going to be one that many people have been asking for, and will probably have a huge subscriber base form the very beginning.

EDIT: So, I'm hoping it has something to do with Ivalice...
