Both WHM/CNJ and BLM/THM can use wands and staves, there's no reason that paladin couldn't use a great-sword. It shouldn't tank with one, that's for sure, but there's no reason it couldn't use one. Give DRK the same weapon type options GS and Sword/Shield.
I can picture it now. Blood Oath and Sacrificial Oath. No idea what they'd do, the names just sound cool.
My hope is that it will work like ACN/SMN/SCH:
Base Class: Soldier
Weapon: 2H Sword
Role: Maneuvers (Party Buff), Damage
Damage Job: Dark Knight
Role: Maneuvers, Damage
Sub-Class: THM
Tank Job: Samurai
Role: Maneuvers, Evasion/Absorption Tank
Sub-Class: MNK
I'm not opposed to classes having multiple jobs, so long as the base classes were built from the start to do that (ACN), ACN gets a straight up Heal spell and a Raise spell, as well as several skills and traits that affect healing.
To make the Gladiator a DPS Job, you would need to rebuild (mines 23, so I'm basing skill numbers from this) a minimum of 9 skills, and then retool a further 4. And thats not even considering whatever i get as my level 30 skill, which would probably bring it to 10 skills needing rebuilds.
Add to that, of 11 Traits, 9 would require complete rebuilds to work in a DPS Role.
At this point, you already rebuilt two thirds of the class... You may as well just go the last bit and make it a standalone class.
Glad might work for DRK for a few resons, most said before me, but I'm just consolidating.
1. Cecil is the base of this job, yes I know... Leon, but lets be honest here. DRK becoming PLD, becoming DRK, it feels right.
2. Lets assume its has GLD as a base class, and it gets shields and all that. Now take into account the very secretive fighters with ties to the GLDs in Ul'dah, the Bloodsworn. We know nothing about them other then they are mostly Ala Mhigan, worshipers of destruction...
3. Also if you have a leveled Pally already, it may be easiest Job to Job switch in game, even if DRK is DPS. Think about it, you wouldn't (maybe) have to respec your bonus points. Even if your Pally dumps everything into Vit, more HP equals more self HP mutilation powers the job is known for.

I hope it is a tank, more interesting classes/jobs to entice people into playing anything but dps is good.
actually it is possible to make the drk start from marauder, and give it a special trait that increases str and atk and loose def/vit in exchange, like they had similar in 1.0 with job traits, can also make it that drk cancels out enmity boosts from all abilities, there are many ways they can approach this, i just wait to see what happens
and i agree with a few of the other people, DONT make ninja a tank, or give it abilities that allow it to tank, make it a dps as it was originally intended like in ffxi
