As someone who has played many, many MMOs that are literally nothing BUT dungeon runners, ARR is exactly the same as any other MMO. The only difference is that in other MMOs your group doesn't need to be absolutely perfect to clear dungeons.
I actually have at least one person typically say thanks or good job. Then again I say it first, before people are standing next to the exit. *shrug* I encountered the same thing in other MMOs where a dungeon/duty finder is available. People didn't really talk unless I did. So.. I would agree that it's the same here as in other MMOs.
Also, you don't have to be rude about disagreeing with someone. That's part of the problem (with people in general, not specific to MMOs).

Each online gaming community seems the same to me as well. I've played with non-English and English speakers alike. People are the same everywhere.
Maybe people aren't thanking you because you have a terribly hostile attitude?
Or maybe you should consider how many players are on ps3 and don't have keyboard access?
Saying that, people say thanks in almost every single run I make.
It doesn't need to be in this game either.
The community just pretends it does.

Just because in the OPs opinion people behave like this in every other game, doesn't mean that it's "OK." What people still do is extremely rude.
My only MMORPG experience before this by the way was FFXI and pretty much the worst insult I ever received there was "you noob." Then ARR came along, I logged in and was like HOLY SH*T, people are bonkers! Then I was told it's common in games since WoW... Well.. Okay. But still not fun.
However, party with someone who AFKs through CM in the morning, you bumped into a jerk. Party with people AFK'ing through CM all day: there's a community problem.
I have experienced the latter. Perhaps I should have just been nicer, maybe they wouldn't have AFK'd?
There are differences between communities. Go from EvE to LoL and tell me they're equally pleasant. Hell, EvE is one of the most cut-throat games out there where everyone is waiting to kill/cheat/steal from you and can put you back many months' progress in one night. It still has a fantastic, supportive community.

I didn't say that, I said the majority of people are fine.
Of course games like Dota and Lol have more volatile communities than games like eve, this point is that like for like communities are pretty much even.
ARR's community is the same a any other MMO I've ever played, and I strongly believe people who think differently do so for one of the reasons listed in the op.
Yeah dont include me with those sad POS. I may have a good or bad day im still not going to jump in game and bully, ninja, or be a general ass to people. I may not be a "perfect ray of sunlight" but im not a disease either. Being imperfect isnt a good reason.
I may be wrong but it sounds to me like youre looking to excuse your own behavior. Regardless there IS something very wrong with this community, actually, humanity in general. Call me a cynic but its been proven humanity can be a lot worse than it generally is if they can get away with it. Games like WoW, CoD, ARR provide one of those environments with little to no consequence ... too many "people" take that as an opportunity to be as "toxic" as the game allows.
Uh huh - I've seen German players disband if they got thrown into a duty finder with English players because they chose all languages (to speed it up), so no, Cairn wasn't being "arrogant" or "contrived" with what he stated, as I can speak Japanese as well when I chat with a lot of them they do pretty much state the bad seeds are why they view English players in general as bad/rude players and will immediately leave. Not all JP players are like that but that's what a good handful of em stated when I join J/E DF searches.
Lich must be heaven in terms of ARR servers then. :\I didn't say that, I said the majority of people are fine.
