I completely agree with you, overall there is a lot of abuse because a large number of gamers do not have empathy towards other players and only care about their own experience. That said, what I don't agree with is that this community is worse than any other online gaming community. There are these types of people in practically every mmorpg and/or other type of online game.

I can't comment on other games, but that's irrelevant anyway. Just because other games have worse communities, doesn't mean this game has a good one. Like I said before, I'm not so much talking about the community as a whole, as there are of course plenty of nice people too. However I take offence to the fact that people are acting as if those of us who have dealt with (many) bad parties are lying.

The fact is none of us truly know whether it is the majority or minority of players who act this way, as we all have different experiences. But what I do know is that it happens a hell of a lot more than some of you are willing to accept.

People by default remember negatives more than positives. This is basic human psychology.

I am willing to stand up and test this, the vast majority are pleasant and decent people, there is no pandemic of toxicity or hostility.

I agree with you and have seen no examples that prove otherwise. I can't exactly speak for everybody else but I've had more pleasant experiences than bad ones in the end. I feel sorry for those of you who are having a lot of bad experiences but please have some faith and try again. I think in time you'll meet a lot of great people and that will outweigh the bad ones.

Of course, people are however more likely to complain about something they don't like than vocalize/type about something they are happy with. FFXI's community was better, but this was by necessity. The game was so hard, and progress so difficult to achieve that who you knew became one of the most important parts of the game. Convincing people to help you for a few hours with no gain for themselves is difficult, but the entire game required it so you had to be nice and helpful at all times. This lead to a situation where keeping your reputation clean and earning karma with others was a full time job. People who did thinks such as ninja looting became community pariahs and would have trouble for years. I remember one guy on carbuncle ninja looted something in Dynamis and 5 years later people still didn't like giving him party invites despite being clean ever since then. If you were an a total ass people who never met you would know about it and refuse to even help you. Word traveled fast in XI. I've never experience a community that was so closely knit where your reputation was everything such as it was in ffxi. This isn't nostalgia glasses. This is just how it was. The sheer amount of nasty attitudes I've seen on this forum and in game has blown my mind considering how mature most of the FFXI community was.

edit: And yes - "it's not the majority" COMPLETELY matters when you're talking about a community. I don't know where people got the idea that a single person not being a pariah of selflessness somehow makes the COMMUNITY that way.
