yeah, FYI, more people experience issues when updating their PS3 firmware because of SSDs then they do with their standard HDDs. You may have better playability with an SSD in your PS3, but you also run a very high risk of bricking your system on updates.

The SSD isn't needed outside of a PC honestly.

I'm sorry but I fail to see the true validity of your statement.

Can you provide valid sources, besides just throwing that out that statement to hinder the legitimacy of my proof? and scare other people?

because from personal experience from friends who have been having SSD's in their PS3s and Sony not making a statement on their HDD replacement page with a notice saying "Do not install a SSD" on their official HDD replacement support page...

I updated the PS3 just fine with this SSD. I have yet to see any trimming or update problems from any of my friends that have SSD's in their PS3s. The friends I have that use SSD's in their PS3's are actually more computer guys... who wanted to toy with the PS3's compatibility... I didn't have an SSD before this video is because I dont usually play games that are downloaded.

SSD's in PS3's is not a new thing...

IIRC there were a few updates that if you had an SSD installed it bricked the system, but at the time auto update only worked for PSN + so only PSN + users got bricked before the update was fixed(took about two days).

This is just my opinion but. I'd rather personally advise just waiting till you get a PS4 unless you plan to use the drive for something other than FF14. If I were to look at it as an investment. It's 100 bucks to make the game more playable(Just this one game) right now. Or few extra 100 for a new console, that will come with the game for free, which will be completely upgraded and most likely have zero of the issues the PS3 version currently has with better graphics. This mind you also gives you a better investment since it will allow you play all the newer gen games.

But that's just my opinion. I do agree that if you plan to use your PS3 for a while into the lifetime of the PS4 and beyond for FF14 or will find a use for the drive later that the SSD is worth it.

So question from a non-techy guy: is this Toshiba 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive PS3 compatable?

Also what was that about SSD's bricking PS3s? I cant really afford a new PS3 or afford/justify a PS4 until FFXV and MGSV are out lol.

the thing is that the SSD will be able to be transferred into the PS4... so for me this works out. a 128GB works for me because I delete game files after I'm done with a game. I don't save a bunch of data onto the HDD of the PS3 and don't plan to on the PS4 either. Even though I would be downgrading in terms of capacity that the PS4 will be able to hold... The performance upgrade by making the PS4 SSD seems well worth it.

At least thats how I look at it. It's an Upgrade for my PS4 that I bought right now, but I don't have to wait to use it. I can use it in my PS3 until I deem necessary to put in the PS4... for example... I'm probably just going to put the SSD in the PS4 when FFXIV releases for it, for the time being I will use the OEM PS4 HDD.

btw if what you say is true, then SONY knows people are putting SSD's in the PS3s and they are maximizing compatibility. (because they did patch the problem with a fix)... Further proof the and SSD is worth it to many PS3 players.... and future PS4 players...

That's a pretty good way to look at it, I personally plan to just wait. I haven't really had many issues with monsters not appearing lately and I've managed to do Odin , Behemoth, etc. without worrying about not seeing the monsters.

Also@Milmoko : It's pretty doubtful any further updates will brick your PS3 for having an SSD and even if it does happen it'll be fixed quickly as you wont be alone when it happens. If you feel the investment is worth it I'd suggest it.

I haven't heard of SSD's bricking any PS3s personally. As for the Hybrid drive you chose... I'm sorry but i'm not sure how compatible it will be... Theoretically it should work... but not sure the performance differences.

Like I stated before... I bought an SSD (not an SSHD like you linked to) because I had future PS4 upgrades in mind.
