As for boomerang, I'd probably just have it be a special attack of juggler instead of a weapon itself. Like a ranged stun.

1.) DRK used a GS before FFXI.Weapons are actually classified as [class type]'s Arm (e.g. a battleaxe is a Two-Handed Marauder's Arm_. Jobs will never changes weapons from the class; you would have to redo animations from the class. There's also nothing technically keeping them from duplicating weapon categories and just reclassifying them; however, I would expect a change of style in the process.
Dark Knight has used a greatsword in only one game in FF history, and that's FF11, where it was merely an alternative to scythe. Dark Knight absolutely should not use a greatsword. It would be much better to use the traditional equipment, sword and shield, or the class skillset best designed for a Dark Knight design, which is Marauder.
Battleaxes already exist, and this thread is about new weapons.
//EDIT:
Also, most ostensibly missing from this thread is the Boomerang/Thrown weapon type which has been in at least a half-dozen titles.
2.) I can't think of a FF game before FFXI where a DRK used a Scythe.
3.) Most every DRK since FFI has used a Sword.
Battleaxe may already be in the game, But the OP posted it on the list.
I know Quistis from FFVIII used a Whip and was a BLU but I would rather keep a sword for BLU.

When?
FF2 -- Leon was the original Dark Knight, but there were no classes and no weapon restrictions. Highest proficiency in axes. Also good skill in swords. Equipped shields, like everybody did, but had poor proficiency with them. Remake ultimate weapon was a spear, for whatever reason.
FF3 -- Class could only equip certain swords and shields. Also had healing magic. /shrug
FF4 -- Cecil used sword and shield.
FFX-2 -- Equipped one-handed swords. There are no shields in Spira.
FF11 -- Equipped scythes, with secondary proficiency in greatswords.
FFT -- Gafgarion equipped sword and shield. In the War of the Lions remake, the super-class wielded swords with shields, and optionally (and sub-optimally) axes.
4HoL -- Dark Fencer crown uses swords or axes.
BD -- Equipped sword and shield
D -- Equipped sword or axe and shield
So, there you have it. Dark Knight does not use greatswords in any traditional role. FF11 is the sole use of both scythes and greatswords on Dark Knight.
Correct. Not sure how much you want to read into that, though, when they also use axes (hatchets) for logging.

Aaah, I stopped playing by the time the Rune Fencer came out. Just read up about it and it could be cool to see that make a return in 14. I agree that I would rather see 14 copy from the series at large, and not from just 11. However, if something was done in 11 only i wouldn't be opposed to seeing it used in 14.It'll be 2020 before they run short on traditional FF weapon categories.
There's only been one other FF MMO, which isn't much of a sample size, and the preferred weapon there was scythe rather than greatsword. There is a greatsword specialist in FF11; it's called a Rune Fencer and it's based on a Mystic Knight archetype. Copying FF11 isn't much of a plan to begin with, of course, especially when FF11 is supposed to be borrowed from the series at large, not the other way around.
