You really don't understand how young the MMO genere is do you. 1998 to now.... only 15 years.

Prior to that is was MUDs MOOs and BBS.

Is FFXIV more like 2004 and less like 2013....sure but it is a really good game and there was nothing wrong with the games pre-2004.
