I see your 1998, and I raise you a 1996: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_59
History an' stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive...g_game#History
You're not too far off on the genre being fairly new though.
Secret necro! No one knew I was also a necromancer!
This thread, though very... very poorly worded, is possibly food for thought?
Does FFXIV feel like an old game? Meh? I don't really think so but then again I haven't really played many mmos. Could SE due to make the game more "modern" or "up to date"? Maybe? I've noticed a lot of games take "modern" to mean the same recycled AAA gameplay formula. I like the way the game is currently, but maybe a face lift wouldn't hurt.
I used to fan blog back in 2004, and one of the creators of Meridian 59 still actively blogs, Brian "Psychochild" Green. His blog is at http://psychochild.org
As for it feeling old, no, not really. I tried the Tera beta on ps4, and it's just as slow honestly. Its just you have more active delaying of moves; you have to hold the button down to charge it, paint targets, etc. If anything, modern MMOs seem to all be struggling to attract an audience; games like archeage and black desert have a pretty high level of fan salt.

It's very interesting to look at threads like this and see the levels of the posters involved. Some never passed level 50 or level 60 - which, I suspect, is a sign that they quit the game.
That aside, I do feel as if FFXIV is archaic in some regards. Particularly the way the forums are handled. I'd love to see an upgrade and revamp of the site. It worked out very well for Blizzard when they did it.
Sure that the Square era with games like FFIV, V and 6, Bahamut Lagoon, Secret of Mana/Evermore and all was the best (and is over since then)
That has more to do with the intentional animation lock and buy-in anticipating frames to punish poor timing, as per Monster Hunter and the like, rather than any ancient net code or lack of improvement since the late 90s, etc.I used to fan blog back in 2004, and one of the creators of Meridian 59 still actively blogs, Brian "Psychochild" Green. Sandbox titles without a hefty social/casual element, likewise, have always been hit or miss. One niche is hardly representative of "modern MMOs" as a whole.

I feel like Square had definitely started to go downhill with FF9. Ya, ya, big head characters and story line, ya ya...except the active battle system was my favorite. Kept me engaged in the fight. Parasite Eve was an eye-opener...never played a horror RPG, and I loved that. Chrono Cross was interesting...not top of my list, but definitely a replayable game. I missed out on FF7 (because I didn't know what an RPG was back then) and got introduced to RPGs and FF with FF8.
But yeah, I do feel like Square has started to become more interested in money and wow'ing fans with visual effects rather than giving us the things we loved with the series: story and the combat system. Final Fantasy 10 was deserved good for its time, but I wouldn't certainly call in a FF classic. FF12 put me to sleep with the whole gambit system. FF13 was just a confusing mess - if they had Snow as a silent, Squall-type character and Lightning as a rebel against the military and fal'cie, and kept those roots, it'd have been fine...but no, FF13 was a waste, and its two sequels were an obvious cash grab. 15...could've been fine, except it took 10 years and THAT was the result.
It amazes me that the Witcher 3 took a little over three years to develop, and it was much better than 12, 13, and 15 in the areas of story, combat, respecting its player base, and overall presentation (music, though, is still largely king with FF). I don't know when Square lost their souls to money, but it's a bit sad that we sort of gotten used to it. Notice I'm not including 11 and 14 because they are MMOs.
Well...I got carried away a bit there. Sorry about that.

They're definitely up to date, since they treat this game like a mobile game crossed with a movie theater.
